Throwing weaponry

Post by DARK SAGE »

You guys know that there wont be any darts, throwing stars, throwing knives etc. in Oblivion. I personally wont miss them because if I have to use long range weapons its normally bow and arrows. Even if I use them they have to be enchanted.

Dude, the fact that there won't be any darts, trowing knives, etc. is almost alot better. Just for the fact that there is that item in the selection to buy. I mean it got on my nerves the first couple of times I was tryin' to arrows for my bow. I bought darts instead, :o . Then I was near these smugglers ang was tryin' to sneak in on them I pull out the darts throw one and end up dying because I was like what the hell? lol.

Can't blame Bethesda for investing their time in more important things, still, I liked the throwing knives a lot :(

Is this truth? I mean, throwing knives/stars are a huge part of the fun things in the game. To be able to just neglect your bow and use a couple of darts you've found on the carcass of a dead enemy is cool.

I think they wouldnt do that, Itll retrive much of the fun of the game, that is variety of weaponry and magic.

Personally, I only use bows and Destruction for ranged attack (I just really enjoy bows for some reason). But.. IMO it is too bad they are reducing choice like that. I also read somewhere they won't have lockpicks; I actually like using them instead of a spell since unlock at 100 points uses quite a lot of mana, and I'd rather carry around a spare lockpick than a stack of restore magicka potions, or blow 80 K for an unlocking enchanted item. Besides... I play a rogue, and lockpicks are just part of that :D

I think choice helps add to the sense of immersion that these games tend to engender.

They are streamlining a lot of things - some things that are slightly unnecessary. If what DW says is true - not doubting you lol - then they will probably be removing security as a skill. They are also merging long blade and short blade int a 'blade' skill. I know they are reducing each skill group (combat, magic, security) by 1 - so what is the other skill?

There were few throwing weapons worth having - the Darts of the Black Dart Gang, and the darts carried by salas valor (both from tribunal). Otherwise - give me ebony arrows of slaying any day.

thieving

there will still be sneak and security, only different. have any of you play thief? well, one of the designers is working on oblivion. some of what he said:
"That's probably because I've had an unhealthy obsession with stealth games and stealth game design since I first played Thief: The Dark Project. That obsession was only strengthened when I went to work as a designer on the Thief series at Looking Glass Studios and Ion Storm Austin, and is still with me today as I help incorporate what I learned into the Elder Scrolls series here at Bethesda."
"In fact, the stealth systems in Oblivion have been completely redesigned in order to accommodate the gameplay fans want and expect. So yes, light and shadow will affect your ability to sneak. Yes, NPCs will react believably -- in both speech and action -- to the player appearing and disappearing before their eyes. And yes, lockpicking now requires quite a bit more than just selecting a tool from your inventory and activating a door
or chest."

they're getting rid the the darts and stars to get a more realistic bow.
"What!!?? No thrown items and crossbows? Hear me out here, because it will let you into our thought process. When we look at characters that like to do ranged combat, they mostly want to use bows and arrows. So instead of doing many types of ranged combat, we decided to stick with bows and arrows -- but -- it's a grand implementation of bows and arrows. You feel the string draw, arrows arc properly, bounce realistically, and stick deep into the right materials. You can see the quiver on your back and type of arrows you have and there are tons of different bows and arrow types. So we trade having several types of ranged combat done in an average way, and get bows done in a grand way. "

i dont like the fact any thing is being taken away, i mean wit the 360 it should be able to handle all the old stuff plus like 2000 new things. lock picks r a must for any rpg game. morrowwind to me was the best for freedom and the variety of items and quests galore, just how i feel but im still waiting for the day oblivine comes out :)
Ask your questions im not afraid! :)

The problem isn't what the 360 can or cannot handle, but what amount of time the developers can spend on a single feature - and if it's worth.

As far as I know much of what we had in Morrowind won't find it's way into Oblivion (Instead, it went to hell. :p ). No spears anymore, no staves as blunt weapons, no thrown weapons (and I really got to love them in Morrowind...), no enchantment as a skill - just a perk (don't quote me on that though), short and long blades are merged to "blades", axes and blunt weapons are merged to "blunt weapons" and....no cliff racers (and that's the only thing I know for sure ;) )

It,s Ok for me

well i did always kind of like to play around with them, but i would never fight with them. The problem was there was so many problems with them. sometimes you would miss shooting a person when they were right infrot of you. I also have a personal grudge for them. When i first started to play the elder scrolls three i through a star thing of a building and next thing i know there are guard every where.

I'm gonna miss them. :( They were nice when your bow was close to being broke and you didn't have any hammers. Pull out a throwing dart and your still in business. If you can't tell I was a Ranger in Morrowind. I liked attacking from far and saving my health for when I really needed it.

Are you sure about that because I have read that they had gotten a guy from "Thief" to make the whole lock pick thing to a mini game to make it more fun. But that was awhile ago...hope you're wrong :)
I got Morrowind on Xbox.

While knives, darts, and crossbows may be out of the picture, Arrows wont be the only projectiles, I am anticipating the day when i can take ten heavy metal helmets atop a roof somewhere in Cryodil and sling them down on the inhabitants, why it may not do damage, the physics engine should atleast have the person fall down. It will be interesting to see if anything happens or if the bucket just bounces off them.

lol that would be pretty funny :D If u run out of arrows just find a couple rocks and throw them at ur ennemy. That was pretty cool in one video where he throws a rock and sets off a trap:speech:
