Escape from Plaguebearer Sewers

Well, the walkthrough doesn't make this sound hard, but --

I killed Kanker. Not too hard once I decided to go bearhand. Problem is, now I can't get back to the surface. There's a lever that opens the grate that was behind me when I fought him, but following the sewers after that, I come to a place with this big pit in it that drops down and traps me with nowhere to go.

Probably this is something obvious since the walkthrough says nothing about it. Help anyone?

Drop down into the pit. There's a small opening with a ladder near one of the corners. Swim to it (you may have to play with your camera angle to spot it). Once you find it, climb up it. After this point, you'll be able to figure out where to go.

If your timing is very good, you can actually jump the pit too, but as the fall won't kill you and you can't drown in the water, the ladder will work, too. To jump the pit, just make sure to have a running start and hit space when your lead foot hits the spikes.
