I was reading the 2E DMG and was wondering how the Weapon vrs PC part worked. You get an Ego score from the weapon, say 23....and a Personalty Score from the PC (W+Ch+HD) say 31. Than what? Its vauge, and i cant remeber what we used to do. I rember rolling with these numbers when attempting to resist an impulse from the weapon...
hmm?
Alsoi, i guess im curious on how 3E deals with this kind of thing.

OK in 2nd ed. you have this:
When personality conflits occur you had to compare item's and character's personality score. Whichever of the two scores was higher is the dominant personality. Remember that any item with Ego of 19 or higher allways consider itself superior and conflict occur whenever you disagree with it.
Personality score of a item: Inteligence + Ego
Personality score of a character: Inteligence + Charisma + Level
Take note that you had to divide number of HP character has with his level (round the result up) and every time a character looses that many HP his personality score is reduced by 1 (so if you had a 7th level fighter with 53 HP, you will get 7.6 as a result, so for every 8 HP lost that fighter's personality score is reduced by 1)
In 3E/3.5 you have this:
You calculate Item's Ego points using table found in DMG. When personality conflict occur you make a Will save (DC = item's Ego) - if you succeed, you are dominant personality, if you fail item is dominant for 1 day or until critical situation occur. Take note that any item with Ego score of 20 or higher allways consider itself superior and conflict occur if you disagree with it.

There is little else to add, Ripe pretty much sums it up IIRC.
It's a fun thing to play with as a DM.
It can seriously mess up your player's character.
