Just Dropped In To See What Condition My Condition Was In

Post by VoodooDali »

Hello SYM

It's been a long while since I popped in. What is SYM like these days?

Hello to CE - I miss you! And DW, Scayde, Gwally, Fable, Maharlika, Weasel, oh god I don't want to list more names, because you know due to my spongy brain I'm gonna forget some and someone will be mad.

I've been busy as hell with my company plus it's been a very hard, very painful year for me, won't go into all the details, but the worst of it was the death of my little brother, Pete, at age 34 last October.

Please drop in and say hello to me!

It's good to see there are a lot of new faces around, SYM was getting a bit stagnant for a while there.

Love,
Voo

Voo! hello! It's good to see you!

I'm very sorry to hear you have had such a painful year...... I won't cite any useless cliches. I'll just say that I know what loss is like...

I'm doing okay, all things considered :)

Hello VooDoo! I am happy to see you here, hope your life has been good! :) I just came back from a congress in Egypts, wohoo I got to see the pyramids, but the congress was awful.

Do you remember a long time ago when I asked here at the forum if anyone knew a place with clay buildings looking like Sagrada Familia in Barca? And you replied you thought it was Mali, and told me your sister had been there? Since then, I have wanted to go to Mali, so providing nothing more urgent than usual happens at my lab, the hubby and I are going to Mali in December. I will bring lots of photos back I hope!

EDIT: sorry I am so tired I missed the part about you having an awful year, forgive me for that. I hope you will be able to recover in peace.

Voodoo, good to hear from you! Though sorry to hear about how your year has been. I hope you've had some emotional anchors to draw upon.

As for SYM, DW's still hanging around quite a bit. Weasel pops in, as does Mah (usually quietly), while Scayde's dropped out of sight and into marriage. Gwally posted as recently as a month ago. I know, because he wrote something about Christians always having been tolerant that got my goat, and I needed it back for a sacrifice.

Incidentally, there are some interesting vintage avant garde DVD releases in the offing--one, a huge thing of 20 hours or so, with a famous 1920s Leger work (whose title escapes me at the moment) that's going to be re-released for the first time since it was initially shown with its Antheil soundtrack (which includes 8 airplane propellers).
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

Thanks for all your good thoughts, it helps!

I was just noticing - we all joined in March-April 2001, and I only have not even 2000 posts, and all of you are upwards of 10,000!!!!! Spammers...

I finally have more time on my hands (don't ask - a long story), so I plan to drop in more.

What's going on with the DF's?

What happened to the football thread?

There's a couple old favorite threads of mine I intend to revive for a while. You've been warned.

My post count is not my fault. It's the company I keep :p

There's a DF offshoot going on in the fanfiction forum, and the football thread is a few thread down from this one. :D

Nice to meet you, hill1.

Now let me get this straight - you only joined in June and have more posts than me? How is this possible? This is spamming that completely defies the laws of physics!

I could have done it too, if I had multiple personalities who could have spammed for me some of the time...

Hey VoodooDali,

It's been only half a year ago, since I came to the World of Gamebanshee (WoG), so I don't know you (yet) and you probably don't know me either. Though I most compliment you on the title that you gave this thread! That's from the Kenny Rogers' song right? You've got taste :) It made me take a look at this thread. Anyway, good luck with everything.

Greetings Vooman. I have absolutely no idea of who you are, although i can see you've been here a while back. Anyway, I check in now and then and felt like reading this thread. Then I saw your avatar! And if I'm not completely wrong, that's the front cover of 'Reflections', a great album. Then I found out that I had to post a full post just to say that. heeheeee

A quick guide to SYM
in case there is much rejoining.

1. AGES

At one point in time, there was a golden age of SYM. It was a long time ago. Discussions were plenty and good. In those times, spam was considered an artform and spammers were artists. Unfortunately, I did not have the pleasure of being there, then.

Then came the age of decline. Slowly, almost unnoticably, all aspects of SYM were changing. I think I entered somewhere in this age's tail.

Age of decadence. The most recent age. Spamming has the status of fastfood; it's no longer the quality that counts, but rather the quantity. It's not that a higher status can be obtained by posting a lot and having a high postcount, but being present in every thread and keeping the conversation going seems to be...

Long posts are frowned upon, certainly when reading those requires some form of thought. When a spamthread is quiet for a couple of hours, the 'EEK!' and even the 'Mad' emoticon appear on the member's faces.

2. MEMBERS

The members can be devided into roughly 3 groups:
1. The Ancients. These members contributed to the golden age and survived the age of decline. Some of them lurk, occasionaly posting a little something -especially when another ancient returns-. My guess is they're still hoping for the golden age to return... However, most of the golden-agers disappeared.
2. The Spammers. These members still aim to touch the essence of spam as art, but the influence of the age of decline, from which most members of this group come, corrupted them.
3. The New-Age. Postboomers, conversators; This group mainly consists of new members or spammers who simply gave up. Replies are short, topics are open, threads are huge. The new-age threads can be fun, but it's spam, not Spam.

3. CONCLUSIONS
Has SYM died? Yes and no. I think the old SYM died and a new SYM came in it's place.
Is there still a place for Spam? Ofcourse! Please do!
Is there still a place for discussions? SYM has always been the place for that. I don't think a lot changed in that area.
Is it wise to come back to SYM? Yes; you were already infected with insanity before you retired. Any form of insanity is required for and supplied by SYM; it has been an important ingredient and it still is.

So, that's my two cents, now get your naked butt to the reply buttons. ;)
