Simply put, my question is whether a mage multi-class is a viable character in an tactics enhanced game? I will be part of a small group so won't be hitting 6 exp until near the end...

I think they're just fine.

Personally (and everybody has a different playing style) I think the F/M (actually, IMHO the F/Ill) is the most powerful character you can play.

I'm not worried about being a little behind a singleclassed mage in spellcasting power when I spend most of the time with a weapon anyway.
