Auto log-out :-(

Post by Keltoi »

I hope it's okay to say that...

For me as a German with only a few years of low-quality English-lessons at school it is very difficult to write a PM or reply on a thread in the given time.
I have to translate everything I want to tell you in a foreign language and many things one can't translate 1:1 so that I have to find paraphrases. Sometimes I even have to look up something in my dictionary.
And when I am ready to send my posting there almost everytimes comes the message: "You are not logged in".

So I wanted to ask whether you could possibly increase the time limit to maybe half an hour, that would be great!

But there is not only complaint but also something nice I wanted to say since I was here for the first time:

I really like this forum a lot. The people write much more politely than in other forums and I especially like this international touch.
My compliments for the Admin and Mods. This is a nice place to hang around!
Thanks!

Best wishes

I don't experience auto-log out at all if I'm inactive for a prolonged periode of time, so possible it could be a cookie problem?
Otherwise, it would be something only Buck can answer to....

Anyways - As an advice for people with english as only secondary langauge (like me :) ) would be to write what you wish to post/PM in a wordprocessor because of the increased view of what you wish to write, and also so you don't loose the text if something goes wrong (for instance having to log in again, or the browser crashes..)
I use this process myself when writing long posts or PMs and can only advice for it :)

Keltoi, are you using some kind of cookie removing program, or cookie filter in your Web browser? Because if so, it sounds like it's killing the cookies you have to keep at GameBanshee. The GameBanshee cookie tracks your member account information. If that cookie is removed from your computer, GameBanshee will require that you log on whenever you re-enter the site.

I don't think it's a browser-specific cookie-problem, as it only happens when I write longer postings.
When I told Hill-Shatar in a PM about this problem he said that it also happens to him from time to time.
And: It only happens here to me. In other forums I stay logged in for days when I forget to log out when leaving.

I use to copy and paste my writings aswell but it would simplify things not to having to log in newly for every second posting or PM I write.

Best wishes and thanks for the quick reply

And you do have the "cookie" checkbox marked when you log in?

Longer postings? How long does it take before the board logs you out? There are some anti-cookie features that allow you to keep a cookie from 5 minutes to an hour on your computer, before it's killed. If you have this option turned on and stay beyond the limit, you'll have to re-log in. Just a possibility, you understand.

@xandax: I tried both, doesn't make a difference.

@fable: I can't tell after what time it happens but when I stay idle for maybe half an hour I have to log in again. But only on THIS board. Other Forums also need cookies and they keep there even if I am idle for hours or days... Even if I shut down my computer they stay right where they are.

Odd. The forums should never log an account out, as long as the person has requested the cookie when logging in. You should be able to type a post for hours, even days, without it requiring you to log in again.

I'm betting this issue lies within your browser, but I really don't know what could be causing it if other forums work the way you want them to. Which browser are you using? Have you tried clearing and recreating all your cookies?

Currently I use to different computers/browsers when I go to Gamebanshee, albeit on the same network. After writing a series of long PMs to several people in my inbox, I began to notice that I will lose the ability to send it.

I also use the cookie, but I have not had the problem since I talked with Keltoi about it. Luckily, if it does, I can always hit back and copy what I want to say before logging in.

When was the last instance of your being logged out? Has it happened since we talked about it (it did for me, but I ended up taking the cookie on this computer as well) or has it stopped?

You might also want to check your Internet Tools settings. There is an area which restricts the downloading of cookies, and can also block you from receiving many things from the internet, by raising PC Security. Built on what fable originally said, perhaps it would be a good idea to check those as well, also making sure that you do not have any other program installed from companies such as Yahoo, MSN, Microsoft and the like that remove spam. I have Scotty the Watchdog on these computers, and it frequently notices things coming on to the computer while on patrol. For some reason, he also has the ability to check cookies at regular intervals, even though he was made mostly for software installations and bug problems, and the like. So even if you do have a computer with nothing to destroy adds, like Ad Smasher, then it may be something else hunting them down and killing them, like setting an Anti-Virus program to blow up your cookies every week or so.

Last time it happened when I wrote my posting in the Pen&Paper section.
Maybe I forgot to take the cookie when I logged in. Usually I mark the Cookie-box but sometimes I forget about it. Most Forums I write in set the cookies automatically when logging in.
I use Mozilla Firefox, the one and only *g*
I guess the problem only accures when I forget to take the entrance-cookie.
I will work on my brain memory so that I remember it!

Best wishes and thanks once more
