Can't leave Fargrove

I'm so stuck, it's probably a very easy thing I'm not doing, but I need some guidance please. I went to see Aleister to get in the Guild of Mages. We did that. He gave me the quest to take the staff to Rianne. He has not given, or offered to give, or requested to give me a letter to take to Lord D.... what do I need to do to get out of town, and how can I get that letter or whatever I need to be able to leave. I haven't been able to leave at all, thru any gate. Thanks Lynne

It sounds like you have quite a few more things to do in Fargrove ...

GameBanshee has an excellent walkthrough that will help you along. Its a huge, and excellent, game but nothing is simple or straightforward.

(By the way, be sure you have the 1.3 patch loaded because if not you will go through a lot of unnecessary suffering.)
