Yer question were "best ranger" , so this be me answer.
Ye make yer pick:

Variable #1:
Minsc: Silver Sword
Valygar: Celestial Fury

Variable #2:
Minsc: Red Dragon Scale
Valygar: Shadow Dragon Scale

Fer the first part, Valygar be the better, fer the second one, Minsc.

But Valygar be havin' extra abilities. Fer one, with these armours picked, he'll be able to hide in shadows an' backstab, an' he has some mage spells. Also, his Dexterity will make up fer the armour loss. On the o'er hand, he be havin' less Strength, but there be plenty o' items to take care o' this.

It be yer game, ye should be able to make yer own choices, methinks.

But if ye really want me opinion, then I'd be goin' with Valygar.

I say Valygar for the reasons already mentioned by our friendly resident Dwarf.

Still, I'd be interested in hearing why Minsc is so popular. I suppose he is a funny bastard... :)

Choose the one you like more...I think they are both quite devastating and in my games always end up in the quantity of kills. I would say they are pretty equal. But if you turn Minsc berserk, he will hack almost anything into pieces
Centuries ago in England........It was an era of chivalry and magic. The evil Prince John unleashed an iron fist of tyranny upon the people. They called out for a champion.........one man answered that call. His name, was Robin Hood. Fearless in his quest for justice Robin Hood challenged the power of the high warlords. While protecting the helpless and the poor. Willing to face death for what he believed, along with the beautiful, lady warrior, Jaheira, the mighty Minsc, and the wise Keldorn. Robin Hood forged a legend that lives on today in............

I prefer Minsc, mainly because Valygar just annoys me somehow. As for technical merits, I kept Minsc along because of his high strength. To me, at least, it would be a sin to give a character with an 18/93 strength a strength-enhancing item; take advantage of his natural brawn, and give that girdle of stone giant strength to someone who has a greater need of it.

Minsc is also much more versatile; he's equally capable with two-handed swords, bows, and maces. The Celestial Fury makes good use of Valygar's katana proficiency, but other than that, there really isn't much for him to use. Minsc can wield weapons such as Lilarcor (my personal favorite for the brawny bald butt-kicker), Soul Reaver, the War Blade, the Silver Sword, the Heartseeker bow, or the Improved Mace of Disruption.

Minsc is also thoroughly tankable, while Valygar makes a rather weak tank. Dexterity alone can't make up for the lack of decent armor, though a good shield can help offset this as well.

Ultimately it's a matter of taste, and my buds scream "Minsc!"

Yes, including you, if you're not careful.

IMO

Minsc.
Tanks Better
Cool Battle cries, high damage due to his strength and has Beserk! :D

Valygar is also a ranger but a stalker, which I frankly dont like at all. :o

I am also hoping thats minsc's minature giant space hampster evolves into this giant pet which finishes off the final boss in Throne of Bhall. LOL :D :D :D That would be cool. :)

I dunno. I always disliked Minsk. the first thing I do when I get out of Irenicus dungeon is dump the cuss. There are much better tanks out there (Korgan, Keldorn).

Valygar has some of the more interesting interactions with some of the other NPC's too. (I love his talks with Jan "I suppose this will be another one of your insipid stories, gnome").

I also like stalkers. Since many ranger abilities get lost with higher armor, having a stalker means not losing them.

Valygar has great resists too, as mentioned before.

Plus, giving up one of your utility slots on minsk for a stupid hampster is just freakin dumb.

My reason for likeing Valygar is his sword wich is great for killing trolls :)

But where I to choose between Minsc and Valygar I'd go with Minsc due to his "tankness", strenght and plus I like Boo :D

I like minsc the most he is far more funny then that boring Valygar.Boo rules.

but i think Valygar is better though he can't go beserk he is a stalker which means:
-Great Hide points
-Backstab dammage
-Mage Spells.

He is specialist in katana, scimaltar(i thought) and he rocks with the Celestial Fury

Minsc may have better strenght and humour,
with al the strenght enchanters that ain't really problem.
And the big advantage of Valygar is He doesn't have a rodent that F***ks UP a quick Item Slot  :D

(sorry to all the Boo fans but he is useless hope to see some difference about that in ToB :D )

minsc & boo hands down.

my reasons match TheHellion's above:
better weapon selection, better armour, more personality.

Well frankly, Minsc annoys me. Sure he's got good strength, but as has been mentioned, Keldorn is mutch better if you want a... 'tank'... when he's armed with the Carsomyr. Now Valygar may not be naturally strong, but at least he doesn't rabbit on about rejoicing hamsters and rangers. I don't care if some goddess looks down fondly on Minsc (anyone ever made Minsc talk to Kveroslava?), he still irritates me. Now... Valygar. First thing, his voice is much nicer, and he doesn't say daft things. And, while wearing some strength enhancing object, he really does do a hell of a lot of damage with Celsetial Fury and his family blade combined together. And yes, I too enjoyed his talks with Jan  .
I don't really have to mention his stealth abilities and stuff. I'd much prefer Valygar.

I like Minsc because he is a great tank and his racial enemy of vampires is great. I hate those guys.

Nay, Minsc can't use Soul Reaver. That be an evil-only weapon.

Bah! Golems be a lot more annoyin'. Them bastards in the Planar Sphere an' Windspear Hills were one tough lot fer sure. One can easily protect himself from vampires usin' the Improved Mace o' Disruption.

Korgan is actually a better vampire killer than minsk.

Give that nasty sum beotch the azure edge, and let him throw it from range.

You get alot of dead vamps.

Azuredge is also plenty effective vs Iron Golems. Just get them stuck in a doorway and happily throw axes for half an hour.

Whoever builds those Golems sure makes 'em strong, but not too smart :D

Cheesy!! :D

Nay, that not be what a true roleplayer'd do, I be afraid. So either fight the things right, or simply avoid 'em.
