How to play as Volgar (with robes!) or possibly any other NPC

Post by Senlur »

Hi All,
I just finished playing through with the unofficial 1.4 patch (many thanks to those involved in translating it!) and after completing the game I was left wanting mainly one thing: robes for my mage! :) With that in mind I began reading about how others had discovered a way via file swapping to change the hair styles of your PCs (before 1.4 arrived with customization enabled). I followed suit with this and decided to see what would happen if I swapped the entire base model file for human male PC's with the primary model file of an NPC (such as Volgar, since he comes with cool evil robes). :) My results were that to my shock, it WORKS. When the game loads up your human male will look exactly like Volgar, robes and all, and still be able to equip things normally. All equipment shows up alright (though there are minor clipping issues with helmets and shoulder armor that cuts into the robes), and it seems to play just fine. Here are some screens:

While you can't really customize your face with this method, it at least lets you play through looking like a real wizard if that's what you want. :) I'd imagine that this would work with every NPC in the game (provided you keep in mind what race the NPC is and what race your PC is).
Here's all I did to get this to work:
1. Go to your C:\Program Files\Dreamcatcher\Dungeon Lords\grn_model directory and locate the file named "PCHM_Basemodel.GR2". BACK UP THIS FILE (ie, copy it to your desktop)
2. In the same directory, locate the file "PCHM_Volgar.GR2" and copy it to a new directory. After it's been copied, rename the copied file "PCHM_Basemodel.GR2".
3. After you've renamed the file, copy this new "PCHM_Basemodel.GR2" file back into your C:\Program Files\Dreamcatcher\Dungeon Lords\grn_model folder. When prompted if you want to overwrite the original, say yes.

That's all you should need to do. Now when you load up a saved game (or start a new one, in theory), your human male should look exactly like Volgar!

I'm not sure if anyone else has already discovered this and if so I apologize for the repost, but I've noticed many others wishing they could have robes in DL, so I thought I'd share what I found out so far. :) Please note, however, that if you are playing multiplayer then I believe your allies will need to swap their files the same as you have, or you will appear normally to them.

EDIT: This definitely works as Galdryn, too.. in fact he seems to work a bit better regarding shoulder armor and helmets.. less clipping. :) See the link below for a pic. Also, I was wrong on my initial thought that all equipment whos up except what's hidden under the robes. The only equipment that shows on your character is shoulder armor, helmets, shields, and weapons, but it's still pretty nifty. :)

EDIT2: Tried it as Emmidor as a human (though he's an elf normally) and it still worked. :) The only thing to be aware of is that to make the models look right you'll either have to start a new character or load up a character that's using the "default" skin and hair colors. Customized skin and hair will show up "overtop" of the NPC's normal hair/skin, and can look funny sometimes.
