at the underdark i came to the conclusion that even on level 18 haer dalis sucked and had to be removed. ok I stripped him from his equipment and dignity and removed him, so he comes to my character and says:
"Fine cast me aside just because my player took a hike. Nice, real nice. Probably stripped me naked too."
funny comment by haer'dalis
Hehe, HD is full of fun if you can stand his mediocre abilities. I took him all the way through my first game, however, and felt his contribution to the party was pretty good.
I think a character like HD is best used with hit and run tactics. I gave him the boots of etherealness, Ilbratha, a ring of invisibility, and the belt of inertial barrier. I kept him near the back and only sent him into melee after all opponents had attacked my fighters.
Otherwise, he was pretty much the only reason for my clerics to memorize heal spells.
Oh, and his romance with Aerie is not only mildly amusing, it seems to dampen her whining and eventually turns her into a stronger (emotionally) character.
Maybe I kept him because as the only other male in the party he helped me keep track of whose battle cry was whose.

Yah, that offensive spin is also great with mirror image.
I forgot about Tensor's T. That means that bards can (temporarily) have the best base THAC0, if cast when the bard is 23rd level. Previously I had only considered the cleric spell, Holy Power, as a way to fight better (I use the term liberally) than 19th level fighters.
Once I adapted my style of play, I really grew to like Haer'Dalis. Neither bruiser nor mage, but very flexible.
