How important is Persuation? I just made a Soldier with 10 intelligence, so I only get about 4 skills per level, and I'm investing them all in Treat Injury. Does this mean I will miss out on a lot of quests or rewards? Would I be better off making a new character with more intelligence? Do my other skills matter in conversations like in KOTOR 2, or can I just ignore them?
Also, is it more fun to play through the first time as light side or dark side? I'm leaning toward light side, but the force powers just don't seem as satisfying.
Thanks.

did'nt have any persuation on my char(soldier/guardian), and i got through the game easy.
DS is fun. i like to be rude to people or to keep my money insted of giving them to people who need it, or i like to kill unarmed people just for the plesure , and to be DS reven. i think you are more powerfull in DS,cuz i defeted malak easyer in DS then in LS.
i hope this help

Well, my character started out with 14 or 15 INT and CHA, and I added one skill point to Persuade on every level up. Persuade isn't really that important, but it can make things easier sometimes, and of course it helps with getting more money out of people; I found it especially useful on Taris, when I was LS and completely broke, and persuaded the Hutts to give me more money for dueling ring victories and successful bounty hunts.
As for the LS vs DS question, I'm pretty sure it's discussed in depth in a lot of topics, but here's my two cents again - I played KotOR completely LS, and I'd single-mindedly recommend it to anyone. The story develops no matter what your alignment is, but it feels a lot better to go through it as a lightsider. Yes, if you do the goody-good things, you'll be broke at the start and you'll have to do a lot of running around to solve side-quests that could be handled a lot more quickly (and brutally) as a darksider, but playing LS just gives you this warm fuzzy feeling of happiness and satisfaction.
It doesn't make that big a difference, really, but I'd vote LS.
And as for LS/DS powers... Yes, maybe the DS's got more powerful offensive powers than the LS, but then again, Wave, which is in my opinion the best Force power out there, is neutral, so there's no real rule about powerful-powers-and-alignment. In any case, you can choose whichever powers you like, no matter whether you're L or DS, and just deal with the penalty. I didn't find it at all difficult, but then again, I was a Consular and used only powers that weren't restricted by armour, and most DS powers are restricted.
Well, I'm just blabbing a load of gibberish here. What I'm trying to say is, I played as a lightsider with high Persuade and survived. I don't think being DS makes fighting Malak any easier, since he resists most of the powers used against him. I'd reccomend you play LS, and either raise Persuade a point per level or get Force Persuade, because in my opinion having either of the two makes things easier. *shrug* It turned out okay for me.

You should do so well as to be sucked into the engine of some evil Sith Lord, you know.

The healing skill is good to have, and persuasion can come in handy in some early encounters; but it's definitely not a necessity. In fact, you can get by without learning any skills at all, because most skills depend upon whomever is using them. And several of your party NPCs have excellent skill ratings. (Not persuasion, though, because that depends entirely on you.)
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

Thanks for the responses. Does force persuade take the place of normal persuade? If so, which is better? I like the idea of getting one point of persuation per level, but if I can get force persuade instead that would be nice. I'm only hesitating to get persuade right now because it is a cross-class skill for a soldier, so just one point of it per level would take half my skill points per level.

Force persuade and normal persuade are two different skills, so no if you learn Force persuade it will not take the place of normal persuade.
What is better? Well it depends what you mean as better. I have found Force persuade is much more effective than normal and you have a better chance of success when using it. But there are some people in the game that are conditioned to mind tricks and if that is so normal persuade is handy to have.
i quite like persuade, especially if playing ls as often it feels wrong to me to use dominate mind etc. in certain situations if i am ls - its like you are forcing them to go against their will whereas persuade its more convincing them in a friendly way. i do agree though that persuade is not an essential skill in kotor1. non of the skills are really, except they make life easier if you do not have to keep switching party members around to do stuff.
I personally enjoy having a fairly high persuade. It's just a personal choice though, you certainly can get by without trying to persuade anyone. There are, of course, some dialog options that you won't be able to get without it, and some quests (the Mandalorian on Korriban comes to mind) that you can't get unless you have it, but that's about it. Nothing truly game changing rides on your persuade abilities.
As someone else said, Force Persuade is different from regular persuade. It usually opens up different dialog and (most entertainingly) pisses off Bastila and Juhani (but delights Canderous, Mission, and sometimes Jolee) to no end when you use it to get out of paying for things. Some people can't be Force Persuaded, however, but CAN be regular persuaded.
As for the lightside v. darkside debate, well again, it's all up to you. Don't base your decision on the powers though, by the end of the game, the penalty for using a darkside power as a lightsider is, for all intents and purposes, nil. Make your decision based on what you like to do in the game. If you're the kind of guy who likes to convince a poor, scared woman to trust you with the secret about why she is hiding out and then, once she's told you a man tried to molest her and then put a bounty on her head when she defended herself, you tell her your going to collect on that bounty and you kill her... well first of all, you're a jerk (we won't get into how I know about that dialog option), and secondly, you'll probably have more fun playing darkside. I've done both and each has good parts, but I find that the light side leaves me feeling a little more satisfied.
