Hallowbrook Hotel- combat tips? *spoilers*

Post by gothmetalla666 »

So.. I'm stuck.. again... was wondering if anybody could give me some tips on combat... being a Toreador, have not got amazing melee/ranged stats, about 6 on melee and maybe 5 on ranged... It's a little late for me to level up now! Oops... I'm in the Hallowbrook Hotel and I'm sure that I'm close to the elevator, I have been okay so far, minimal use of bloodpacks etc and waiting for health to regenerate in between rooms (plus extensive reading of manual to pass time) etc etc...

So anyway, I get to this corridoor and there's about 8 or 9 Sabbat waiting for me, I have tried many approaches such as charging full speed with Celerity enhanced with Blood Buff, also tried a Auspex/Celerity, Presence/Celerity etc etc combos, even all my disciplines at once but this lags up the game and as the others- doesn't seem to work. I've tried shotguns, machine guns, katanas, sledgehammers, fireaxes what ever else... nothing seems to work :( they always kick my ass.

Have been stuck on this a while (well about an hour or so!) and need help before I scream :)
I game, therefore I am.

I dunno if this applies for the part your on or whether I'm talking about something that's ahead of where you are but hopefully it's before, it also depends on what patch you've got.
If you grab the Black Hand Katana (can't remember the tal-whatever full name) and the flamethrower from a room in the Hotel (You'll have to wander abit.) The flamethrower basically reduces any vampire it touches with its flamey... ness to ash in a near instant. So 8-9 vampires in a room will be dusted in no time, and any ghouls in the room will be set on fire and run around screaming, which will give you the time to take care of them.
Hope that this helps in the slightest, although if you have a patch after 1.2 or if you're before the part where you can get the forementioned items it's basically useless. Anyway, goodluck.

If that doesn't work... I went in with katanas and took them one by one

Well your stats are not going to make it easy! What level disciplines do you have?

Crouch to increase shooting accuracy, and reduce LoS of opponents, so that you suffer less return fire. Use celerity with auspex to help ranged fire. Make sure all weapons are fully loaded before starting the corridor, so you can switch weapons if necessary.

Do not be afraid to use the flamethrower, you can buy more ammo for it after this quest, and you may need it. Although I have a feeling you will also need it at the end of the level.

Celerity can be used to get you stealth kills, as you can move so fast as to get behind them before they see you. Take advantage of that to level the odds quickly. It will depend on the layout of the room you are in, but it can work.

After this level, try to get melee up to 7, as that is the use requirement for the katanas, and you will need them at some point.

If your sneaking ability is high enough, try to sneak attack a few of the sabbat from behind. Try to kill them one by one and not in big group fights.

I'm with Confuzzled and Lucita on this. If main strength isn't serving you well, then go with stealth and celerity. I spent a year playing this game on a semi-crippled computer, and stealth always served me well. The hallway with 8 or 9 vampires in it isn't nearly so tough if you take them on 1 or 2 at a time, hide a lot to regain your health, and take them out as fast as possible.

In the vernacular, "No matter how powerful the wizard, a knife between the shoulder blades will seriously crimp his style."

*sighs*

Well, I found the flamethrower but I could not find this super-powered katana that everybody speaks about! I wish I could find it... Haven't played the game since, have been getting my mock GCSE results back this week and my parents are getting seriously angry... :p I played FF-X the other day instead because I haven't played that in a while, was quite refreshing.(I know it's off-topic, but any FF-X fans here?) Am about to try your suggestions, cheers guys. Maybe I could just run to the end and not even bother to fight them.

My discipline stats are: Celerity 3 or 4 (can't remember); Auspex 2; Presence 2 (I've not been a great fan of the Toreador disciplines aside from Celerity) :(

My stealth is actually 6 or 7 I think plus that dexterity charm thingummie and with no dexterity-stealing armour on, but my problem is that it seems the moment I even move from my hiding place, all 9/8 Sabbat go for me and well that's not great news! :speech:

EDIT: Oh, and I have nearly used up all my flamethrower ammo already :( silly Vicki. No more bloodpacks/ elder vitae either :(

Eh...first thing, the Tal'Ma'Rahe Katana blade isn't in the Hotel anymore, that has been changed in version 1.6 or 1.7 I think...you get it from Yuki in Chinatown after completing her quest.

Second thing...if you make a stealth kill ( if you don't know what it is, if you go into stealth mode and go for a thug from behind you get a little skill icon at one point, now press E, instant kill !), go back instantly and hide until the rest of the sabbat troopers aren't searching anymore. Then go for the next one...and so on....

And I wouldn't use the flamethrower for the thugs...use it on the Boss Tzimisce at the end of the Hotel Quest.

Ah well that explains the absence of the katana. I didn't get it from Yuki after completing her quest :S odd. I tried stealth kills but they didn't work... the sabbat were too close together and well... you can pretty much guess. I lured them out one by one from a little window box I found. It worked. :) As for the flamethrower, I wish I hadn't used it, but I got a little over-excited (Oooooo... O_o FIRE! (I thought) and I used a lot of it on some sabbatty monster type thing) and so I have only 1 shot of it left saved for the Tzimisce at the end of the level. Oh well, I've beaten one once, naturally I can do it again :p :D

"Hmmm. That's a pretty blue. That looks like...FIRE!" (Richard Pryor, in reference to the incident where he burned himself up in Ether).
Well, if you don't have the Vorpal blade, and you got a little over-ambitious with the Flame Thrower, I've found that Andrei can be handily taken down with either the Colt Anaconda .45 or the McKlusky .50. Just hide under the platform to the left of the door and wait for his Warform to come to you.

That reminds me of the last time I was fighting that boss... First I engaged in hand-to-hand combat until I got his health down a bit, and at some time I drew up the flamethrower and started barbecuing him. His health started dropping so rapidly that I practically felt sorry for the poor bastard. :) So I decided to put that thing down and continued beating him up, just to make it more like a fair fight! Otherwise it would end up too short and not satisfying at all.

That was, of course, with a fairly fight-capable character, but I never made any character fully specialized for fighting, and never maxed-out any of the fighting stats/abilities/feats/whatever. I always liked all-rounders and never wanted to sacrify any ability to be useless.

So, like I said, it seemed quite an easy battle with an all-rounder.

To gothmetalla666, you said you burned up your bloodpacks, but you do have the Odious chalice. Don't forget to use it in the boss fight ;) And use that little firethrower ammo you have left on him, any fire you can get helps with him.
ROMERO: If you should see any zombies in that time, you need to put them down. Just don't let them bite you.
PC: Why? Do you turn into a zombie if they bite you?
ROMERO: Naw, it just hurts like a bitch.

Odious chalice, Raa m'dear? I don't recall it... pray tell... Was that supposed to be a reward for Pisha's quest or something? *suffers from a total lapse of memory...* oh dear... well since having got to the elevator and killed the dude with the blue firey type stuff by charging at him mercilessly with a fireaxe, I await to go to the next bit. Haven't had time. Coursework and the like. Maybe if I finish my 3 essays for tomorrow I can go there later :D * jumps for joy!!!!! *

Ah, well that could be a problem for me... I forgot about Pisha's quest when I went to the museum... and so didn't get that reward. I got the other item from the Giovanni mansion however, and got the reward for that. But not the Odious Chalice *sigh* oh well.
