It's taken a long time, but I've finally finished this thing. I knew it had taken a while, so I went back to look at my oldest saved game. It was from December 2003. Holy crap. I figure I'm one of the slowest people around.
It wasn't exactly that it took that long, but since it's such a big game, I'd always get involved in different shorter game that would divert my attention for a month or two. Then I'd come back to SOA and forget how to play:
"How in the hell do I counter that spell?"
"Why can't I hit this wizard?"
"Greater Wolfwere? WHY WON"T YOU DIE?!"
Anyway, it's been fun. I used this site and this forum in particular to get past a bunch of difficult spots.
So, thanks.
Finally completed BG-SOA
fable,
Well, you asked for it.
I think I liked most that it was so huge. I'm one of those people that try to do every mission. I did every mission that I could. If I couldn't do one, it was because I was either the wrong alignment or I had done something beforehand that made it not possible. For example, I really wanted to finish the skin armor (or whatever it's called). To do that, you need to kill the dragon in the Underdark, but I took the other side, so I never finished that quest.
Also, I just loved finding new items, spells, equipment, etc that make my character better. And I liked that the appearance of my character would change as I equipped better items.
I loved the dialog. I figure a large part of the time I wasted playing this game was reloading at certain points so that I could hear the different dialog options. The banter between party members was great.
What didn't I like? Well, related to the party member banter, I got tired of the problems with keeping my party happy. I got tired of people trying to leave my party based on quests I chose or when I removed or added someone to my party. I understand it from a role-playing standpoint, but once I built up a solid group and gave them the best weapons and items, it would really piss me off when I someone would suddenly refuse to be part of the party.
The long load times between different areas were annoying. Also - and maybe this is because I had so many save games - the time to simply save or reload seemed to take a long time.
Finally, I hated the affects that fear and mind control spells had on my party. Maybe it's just because I didn't know how to counter them, but those spells annoyed me more than anything else. It seems like I was always having to reload a mission because one of my characters got spooked ( and ran around getting pummelled to death) or got dominated ( and proceded to beat another teamate to death).

It's fun even to this day, imho, although it will never be quite as fun as the first time I played it. But that's the case with everything, you might re-read of re-see books and movies, but nothing beats the first time.
Congrats on finishing the game, and I agree that the dialogues and items really played in the first time I played it. I loved the story and plot more than anything else though, and I just love the graphics even to this day. And all those spells that's just *too* funny.

It took me well over a year to get through it, and still haven't finished ToB!
The only thing that bugs me about the game is inventory management, especially when everyone's pockets are stuffed with all manner of baubles.
However, I found the perfect solution: Boo! (son, aged 10). He gets a kick out of optimising items, so I can let him fool around for a bit and usually find that he's boosted my AC or THACO by a coupla points. Ideal.

There's also a mod that helps with inventory management, by allowing you to combine veyr large quantities of all like items: Ease-of-Use.
