Turning the shadows off might help some ... the game from the very beginning is like that? Oh and have you tried fiddling with the contrast as well during this?
And He whispered to me in the darkness as we lay together, Tell Me where to touch you so that I can drive you insane; tell Me where to touch you to give you ultimate pleasure, tell Me where to touch you so that we will truly own each other. And I kissed Him softly and whispered back, Touch my mind.

the game can get very dark in places, but you should be able to see the rats etc. and play it. have you tried altering your monitor's settings at all (sometimes my monitor auto adjusts to games and then i have to alter it manually as it is too dark or too bright - but maybe thats just my monitor being a pain lol)

The only other place to try is the console.
Type, Brightness and change the setting there.

What driver version are you using, sounds more like drivers?
What about Motherboard (if VIA) 4 in 1 drivers?
Trust me, most of the names I have been called you can't translate in any language...they're not even real words as much as a succession of violent images.

Monitor settings and card settings. You can boost the brightess and gamma of your video card to improve your visibility, and while this might seem unlikely, lowering your contrast also helps.

Hello All,
Thanks for all your answers.
my drivers version is 8.221.0.0, RADEON 9550

i have tried all the settings, monitor desktop, brightness, contrast , gamma but no, i cant play the game.

i am in tutorial!
when jack tells me to catch rats , i cant even see the rats. i have installed it on my friends computer and it seems allrigth.

and one more point: when i increase contrast, gamma brightness in desktop, and start the game , on exit i see that the desktop settings are corrupted too, i mean become darker almost as i didnt set and applied!

i have asus radeon 9550 agp .
is there an incompability with it? i really want to play but cant. do i have to change the hardware?

Seeing in the dark

I used to have that experience all the time. It's not the video card - it's the monitor. With my AOC monitor that was always a problem, but when I replaced it with a Cicero, the problem went away.
In the meantime, max gamma and brightness and try lowering the contrast. That usually helps quite a bit. The display looks a bit washed out, but at least you can see where you're going.

I think it is incredibly dark too which is sad cause what I can see of the graphics looks great, I just wish I could see more.

Or have a flashlight for my character to carry around.

I noticed something above. They said they increased the contrast. Wrong move. You increase gamma, brightness, etc, but if it's still too dark, you decrease the contrast. Increasing contrast only makes things worse.
