So I place the crystal which was won in glorious combat (is there any other kind?) upon the Isle of the Damned onto the shadow altar, and one of the alcoves becomes appropriately shadowy and forbidding. I walk over to the darkness, and a bar at the bottom of the screen informs me that this is the "Shadow Ruins Entrance", or something similar. However, at this time, real world concerns dictated that I end my foray into fantasy, and I saved the game before entering. Now when I load the saved game, the shadow quickly dissipates, leaving me standing in front of a plain alcove. Hitting the 'shift' key immediately doesn't help, and I can't remove the crystal to replace it.
Question is, is there a solution besides loading a game saved from several days ago? I'd hate to have to figure out where I was and fight all those battles again. Too much bloodshed! And why does virtually everyone I encounter want to kick my butt? (The last is a rhetorical question. No need to offer an opinion.)

From reading the walkthrough as I played I was aware of this problem but I duplicated exactly what you did. After you are inside the portal will activate again and if you leave the same thing will happen--You are stuck outside with no way to reactivate the portal.
You will have to return to an earlier save game. I had one only a few minutes back as I used all ten slots and had over 900 incremented saves by the time the game was over, i.e., I didn't trust what situations I was getting into.
There are places in the game--sometimes they appeared to be intentional and sometimes they are exploits--where I would highly recommend you beefing up your character about as far as you can stand it. I had a slightly weak character and discovered a spawning exploit where I hit behind a corner by a suspended walkway and hit on monsters for an entire afternoon until my character leveled up from 9 to 14 or so. I never really had to do it again anywhere though I always took advantage of killing every creature I cam across. Killed all the Fire Drakes just NW of Arindale eventually too once my level was in the high twenties I think.
Someone mentioned in a thread and I don't know how to do it myself or who it was or how they contacted them...that you can Hex Edit the saved game in question and set things right again. In your case you need to be outside the Shadow Ruins with the whatever it was in your inventory and not on the pedistal.
Good luck. This is an unpolished and unforgiving game still and once you get things sorted out save very often.
