PLZ HELP!!! (cannot install BGI)

Post by Magikan »

I've recently recieved a new computer, running XP Professional, and I can't install baldur's gate.
I've previously been playing it on my other computer (running 98), with no problems.
What happens: the auto prmpt comes up when i insert the CD, but when i click install, the autopromt closes, and nothing happens.

What I've tried:
Manually opening the stup file from the CD
Copying the entire game from my old computer to my new computer
Changing the compatiblity of the setup file to 98 and 95
Changing the compatibility of every single exe and bat file to 98, and then 95
Downloaded the latest install shield
Visited BioWare and black isle and looked at their suggestions
searched the GB forums for this problem

None of this seems to work.
The version i have is the original saga including ToSC (on 3 CD's)
The only problem i can think of is that i do not yet have Service Pack 2 (or even SP1).

Note: Baldur's Gate II installs without any problems.

Is there a patch for fixing this program? or maybe a program for running it in?
Or should i run dual operating systems and run it through 98?

Any advice appreciated.

(edit) What is this? Can nobody help me?

patch

not sure if this is the problem but do you have the directX 8 patch for playing BG on xp.....but saying this you have to install the game first,so if you can't do that this will not help

My advice is that you download the Service packs for XP, or that you replace XP with Windows 2000 or 98, or run them dual, which one you prefer.

I play BG1 on a computer with XP, so the servicepacks is the only problem I can think of

I don't have personal Windows XP experiance, so I'm not sure. However if you were messing around with putting files in and then removing them, that may have screwed something up? I know if you put some files in, and then directly delete them, instead of uninstalling them, it becomes almost impossible to install it the regular way. (The machine still has copies of the files, etc. There are some tutorials on the internet about how to remove them. I'll find some if you think that's the problem.)

Just a thought. *Shrug*

Start over again. Try to uninstall and delete everything associated with Baldur's Gate 1 on your computer. Then try installing.

I had a similar problem with IWD a long time ago, and I needed to download a program called "ccleaner", which allowed me to manually delete files. I had to use this tool to get rid of everything before reinstalling.

Good luck!
