patches for gothic 2

are there any patches that need to be downloaded for gothic 2? if so, does anyone know where to get them from?

No not really, what version do you have 1.31 or 1.32
Orginal was 1.31 and US Atari version had a small added file with translation corrections, which made it 1.32.

If you have the Gold version I recomend you do NOT install the 4th cd Night of the Raven, it increased the difficulty very much and could ruin your experience as too hard.

not sure what version, i think its the uk version but not entirely sure on that. i don't have the gold edition as it was more than twice the price - i'll keep an eye out for the expansion and get it at some other time.

it just seems strange that there appears to be a german patch but no english patch

German version was out over a year, if I recall, before we got the English version.
So the UK version 1.31 was already patched when released.
