:o Can any one help. How do you defeat the freezing breath ghoul/spirit. I tried fireballs to no avail.

They are immune to cold and also ranged damage I believe. Fireballs work. You must not have a high enough skill level and enough spell books. Waling away works, but its a pain since they usually move up out of range. An exploit that people use, assuming that you are willing to do it, is to pause the game whenever you are frozen, then wait until the effect wears off, then attack again until refrozen. Remember that you can block these attacks sometimes.

Other techniques that work...

Use a Crystal Ward of Ice if you have one (I think the Fargrove temple sells them... you could leave the catacombs and buy a couple) which will prevent the freezing effect and reduce damage taken

A Crystal Ward of Petrification will prevent the freezing effect but not reduce the cold damage

Or as a minimum you should use Crystal of Unpetrify to get mobile again if you don't want to use the exploit Frodo1 mentioned.

To hit them... magic missle, fireball, shooting sparks and shrieking star all work pretty well if you have enough points in Arcane.

And as Frodo1 said too -- use your shield!! You should be able to easily predict when they will attack you.

Good luck!

These guys are tough. I HATE them!!! :)

If you're not an Arcane type, or even a spell caster, settle in for a long haul. Potions of Power will make you immune to the freeze affect, but only for a short while. The apothacary woman near the temple sells them. As for technique, they do telegraph their attacks, so try to time a "drive by" melee attack right after dodging their attack. Make no mistake, though, it takes a bunch of time and probably more than a few deaths, especially considering that there's also spawns to deal with...
