Shadow issues (ati)

Post by Tricky »

Hiya.

Just got Oblivion yesterday and I've been barely able to pull myself away from it. I've encountered but a few bugs, nothing eath shattering. One though has been annoying enough for me to completely disable the shadows cast by npc's and objects. These shadows 'work', but the edges are jagged, sometimes slightly, sometimes badly. This usually doesn't make for much of a problem, but when I talk to people it often badly messes up their face. In any case, it looks nothing like what I've seen from the videos.
I use a Radeon 9800xt (Hercules), which is perfectly suited to run the game provided that I disable the fancy stuff like light blooming. I wanted to know if other ati users here have encountered this problem and which drivers they are using. I'll post screenshots and my catalyst version once I'm able to pull myself away from the game again. :p

Please post links to screens, not the screens, themselves. The site owner doesn't want them on the boards.

I'm using an ATI 9600, and get good results with Bloom. The difference between 800 x 600 and 1078 x 768 is a light sharpness, but honestly not that much. I got some slow framerates in the wild with distant view turned on, but with it turned off, and with everything cranked to about two-thirds, I'm seeing a great deal of detail.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

The jaggy-ness happened to me once too... when I played around with the options too much.

It appears to me that in order to make it go away completely you need to quit the game and start it again... on the preloading screen (the one that comes up and you have to click "Play") click on "Options". Then click on "Reset to Defaults". After it has detected your card and reset things to defaults you are again free to choose your own video settings (both on that screen and in the game).

The one thing that you absolutely _cannot_ mess with is "Shadow Filtering" that _must_ be set to high. Do not change it.

Well 'Shadow Filtering' is an unselectable for me, so that's not much of an issue. It's the 'Self Shadows' option that really breaks my heart. Sorry, yesterday I figured it had something to with the int./ext. shadows slide bars ;) . Your 'Reset to Defaults' solution simply disables those shadows, which by the way works just fine for me.

Say Fable, could you do me a really big favor and check if the 'self-shadows' option causes similar problems on your Radeon? To check it over quickly simply start a new game and wait until the emperor starts talking to you. From your spot over by the window, the emperor's face should be lit up from exactly the right angle and you should be able to see those funky shadows all across his face.

I made some screenshots, but I'm at work now. I'll post them tonight.
