Shadow issues (ati)

Hiya.
Just got Oblivion yesterday and I've been barely able to pull myself away from it. I've encountered but a few bugs, nothing eath shattering. One though has been annoying enough for me to completely disable the shadows cast by npc's and objects. These shadows 'work', but the edges are jagged, sometimes slightly, sometimes badly. This usually doesn't make for much of a problem, but when I talk to people it often badly messes up their face. In any case, it looks nothing like what I've seen from the videos.
I use a Radeon 9800xt (Hercules), which is perfectly suited to run the game provided that I disable the fancy stuff like light blooming. I wanted to know if other ati users here have encountered this problem and which drivers they are using. I'll post screenshots and my catalyst version once I'm able to pull myself away from the game again.
