Houses: why? (possible spoilers!)

Post by fable »

Yes, houses. They're expensive, and you can't even decorate them, yourself. So far, we know that you can use them to store stuff, because otherwise it will all vanish if left anywhere else. (Or so we think. The jury's still out on that.) You get a house, so presumably you can sleep, if you want to. But what else is a house good for? If you take food items (alchemical ingredients) and make potions from them, do they respawn in the same area? What else?

Again, we'll all see the full opportunities and weaknesses of housing ownership in time. One thing is for sure, that is that owning a house won't solve your storage problems if you try to keep lots of stuff. This is because chests and other containers have weight limits. I will probably settle for a place with enough space for my alchemical ingredients, alchemical equipment, extra potions, and a few weapons or pieces of armor. I'll just sell anything else.

I would like to hear if all containers in houses do not respawn and are safe for storage. This would seem logical, but if someone can confirm this down the line, that would be great.

Yes, but that's why I'm asking, here. ;) It's quite possible by now that some players have purchased not merely houses, but all the additional "packages" for each room.

I bought the house in Anvil and went through the quest it provided. been using a cupboard upstairs to hold items and so far theyve stayed. recently also bought the... i think Skingrad house. added all the upgrades and to be honest it just seems a waste of money. though ive got no problem with money ;)

Would be a shame. Quite a few housing mods in MW offered something more--like Kahleigh's Retreat, with its extensive alchemical lab (lots of storage space types, a wall devoted to ingredients, and a sorting mouse that took your items and put them all away properly).

I hope Bethsoft atleast observed the mannequin craze in Morrowind plugins, do these feature in any shape or form in Oblivion?

I hope so, too. Again, Kahleigh's had two connected rooms with 6 mannikins each, and a host of workshop tables; also 3 display tables behind glass. I noticed the latter in the guilds. Are there any in the homes, however?

I believe there are no armor dummies in Oblivion, I remember reading something about that over at B site, from one of the devs. But there was talk of display cases for your armor and such. You can buy those, as well as armor racks ... but I liked the dummies. In general I do not like the houses, I need space for both ingredients and weapons/armor being a pack rat. I miss that Morrowind mod, I had/have it too.
And He whispered to me in the darkness as we lay together, Tell Me where to touch you so that I can drive you insane; tell Me where to touch you to give you ultimate pleasure, tell Me where to touch you so that we will truly own each other. And I kissed Him softly and whispered back, Touch my mind.

Chests? Who needs chests?

In Morriwind, I would just lay all my items up on my bed or my table or something. Unless you want your home to look nice and tidy with out armor and plants and other items all over the place, then throw everything everywhere you can. I'm not sure if people can brake into your house and steal things, but I doubt it.

In Morrowind my house in the Skaal village had a SEVERED NORDIC LEG lying on the bed.... WHERE I SLEPT.

Those of us who want to put armor on mannikins, and special weapons we've liberated on display, and those of us who prefer not to lie in bed with severed legs--we're the ones who need chests. :D I liked being able to find whatever I wanted immediately, and since I accumulated a lot of goods, this was great. I had one box for sellable potions (when my favored merchants got their cash back up), and another for those I used and made frequently. My favorite weapons went on a back workroom table, along with a ring that fortified my PC's intelligence for better enchanting.

I honestly don't think Oblivion will begin to approach this, but I also expect mods to swiftly fill the gap. Hopefully, too, they'll get around the new idiocy that turns an object placed into the world from your inventory into a fast-moving projectile.

Why? There's been god knows how many community-made house mods for Morrowind. Like with the horses and things, I guess the devs just took the clue.

I concur that it doesn't add much. At least in Fable it allowed me to get 'norty' with my wife. :D

If you'll notice, mine dates back a couple of years before the game, and was meant to indicate "one who retells legends." Now, please, let's stay on topic. ;)

I used the sack near the bed in one of the fighter guild (the one with an orc as the guild master), so far none of my possessions went missing, and I have put quite an amount of items in there (over 1000 in weight I think), so that seems a good place to store items.
