It's not like Wow wherw you have to optimize, and make all the right choises to be playable. If you are good at lockpicking, and do it alot, you simply become good at picking become. Also, you can pick any lock any time, no minumin lvl required.
For combat, you get to choose between blunt or blades, and light or heavy armor, that's about it. They're equally good, it's mostly about preference. Also, you'll automaticlly become better fighter when fighting. No trick to it, really.

Well first of all some of us posted characters in one of the threads started by Fable a little lower in the forums so you can take a looksee at what people chose, you may like some.

Now you can always make a custom character, you don't have to pick from what is given to you. For example I use a combination of magic/blade that for me is the best to be sure that you will have a fair chance of picking them off in all situations (like you can't kill a ghost with an ordinary weapon f.e.). Lock-picking in this game is well your skill, you'll see. I chose that as a minor skill but I can open locks without problems because I got enough practise (same will be for you).

Also Fable posted some advice here in the forum, very comprehensive about creating a char, so you might want to read that too :)
And He whispered to me in the darkness as we lay together, Tell Me where to touch you so that I can drive you insane; tell Me where to touch you to give you ultimate pleasure, tell Me where to touch you so that we will truly own each other. And I kissed Him softly and whispered back, Touch my mind.
