OK, you click on a chest and the lock window opens up. For simplicity sake, use the first chest where there are five tumblers. Tumblers 2-5 are in the up and open position. Tumbler 1 is down and locked.
A. I am assuming that this first tumbler is what needs to be opened as when I hit auto-attempt that is the tumbler that gets raised and the lock opens.
B. The manual says use the space bar or left mouse button. Neither of those appear to do anything. My pick moves up and down with the mouse movement (actually the tracker ball- I use a Logitech rollerball mouse).
So, how do you actually manually open a lock? I've tried to move my pick up into the "down position" tumbler, the tumbler moves up and then falls. However, i've yet to get one open on my own. When I select the auto-attempt, it opens immediately without breaking any picks.

You move your lockpick to the "down" tumbler and then move the lockpick up (again move it with your trackball). It either falls down pretty fast (which means you did not hit the right spot [which is determined by your skill]) or it'll go down slowly.
If it goes down slowly you have to VERY FAST click the left mouse button. If your skill is high enough and the skillcheck succeeds it's lock in and you opened the lock. If not your lockpick will break
The higher the lock (i.e.: the harder it is to lockpick it) the bigger the chance for more than one tumbler falling down if you fail - so even when you already had 2 up (on an average lock) a failure on the last one could have all 3 fall down again.

Be sure to save before attempting any, due to breaking of the picks. For some odd reason, I find going right to left much easier, and it works better.
I suggest you just push them up a few times to see the speeds at which the tumbler goes down. I can actually detect 3 of them - the really fast one, the slower one, and the one when it appears that it will stay in place - the last one being when you should click the left mouse button to hold it in place. You'll get used to it, I had an awful time at first but now can open any lock.

And He whispered to me in the darkness as we lay together, Tell Me where to touch you so that I can drive you insane; tell Me where to touch you to give you ultimate pleasure, tell Me where to touch you so that we will truly own each other. And I kissed Him softly and whispered back, Touch my mind.
