Baldur's Gate II. Large game, well-defined party NPCs who have plenty of their own dialog, lots of side quests, a good impression of non-linearity, strong on atmosphere, time-proven engine.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

I would suggest that too...except, I feel you get a better grasp of the storyline having started from Baldur's Gate 1 rather than 2, not that it's essential.

The intro sequence to BGII I think gives the newbie a clear enough picture of past events. Although I would recommend that you player Baldur's Gate I firstly, if only to experiance the fantastic unfolding storyline.

Also Fallout 1 and 2 are very good games too, I really recomend those. And like in BG, playing Fo1 first is very good idea, since it gives much more to the second game, which is far better than the first one.

BG1 and BG2 might be an overdose. The games are very long, and the atmosphere is very dark (nearly pseudo-religious).
I recommend Icewind Dale 2 instead. It has the same graphic engine but the character development is better and you can build the party you want instead of being limited to the few bearable NPCs you meet who have the right alignment.

Both games are not very difficult, many finished the games without understanding the rules.
If you get into trouble you can always ask in the forum for help.

Other games I recommend even more are Might and Magic 6,7 or 8.

The bird perspective in BG or IWD where the characters and monsters are so little that you can't depart humans from drow made the game seem more like a strategy game to me.
The first person perpective in MM6-8 among other things gave me a far better rpg feeling.

If you choose to play the Baldur's Gate saga, do BG1 first, because...
1) You get the storyline as it unfolds (which gives some dramatic weight to it.

2) You can export your character into BG2, with some improvements you got in the first game that you may not have in the second.

Important note: If you want to have the experience that you ended BG1 with, you must export and import your character in a character file other than CHAR1. A CHAR1 file regulates a character's experience points in the start of BG2 to a level that may be lower than you actually achieved at/around the end of BG1.
