Fallout 2 FAQ

Post by Kipi »

This thread is for question and problems of the game itself. For technical problems, please visit THIS thread.

EDIT: Now, even though I will add more information in nearly future, the FAQ is in that form which finally allows others to post here. So, if you have anything to comment, you can do it here.

Character -related questions:

Q) Does my character's age affect to the game?
A) No. Character's age isn't checked in any scripts. Thus, it doesn't affect anything. It's just one small detail to spice the game up.

Q) What's the level cap in Fallout 2?
A) level 99...

Q) Is there any way to remove statuses like Berzerker or Child Killer?
A) Sorry, but no. Once you have got such status, you must carry it forever. Like in real life, you must carry the results of you actions...

Q) How can I remove "Crippled" status from my arm/leg?
A) There is two way: Firstly, using you doctor skill and doctor bag. This may be a bit risky though. Secondly, by visiting a doctor. One can be found from
Vault City. There are others, too.

Q) WHy doesn't my skills rise when I read book/magazine?
A) Most probably the skill you are trying to rise has got to 90-91%. This is the point where books and magazines stop affecting your skills. There is, of course, ways to get around this, by using correct drugs and so on...

Q) How does the armour stats x/yy% work?
A) The first number, in this case x, is taken from the total ammount of damage. THen yy percent will be removed from the remaining ammount.
Example: Opponent makes you 100 damage, your armour stats is 10/50%. Firstly, we take 10 away from the total ammount, 100-10=90. From the remaining ammount, we take the percentage away, in this case from 90 we take away 50%, which is 90-50% = 90-45 = 45. So, when opponent makes 100 damage to you, and your armour stat is 10/50%, the actual damage taken from your HP is 45.

Q) Is there any "Infinite XP" -cheeses?
A) Yes, there are. Here are two of such tricks, more will be added later.
  1. For this trick, you need something small, like bottle of booze or something similiar. The trick is to put the item to NPC's inventory using stealing, and then stealing it back. Each time you success, you get 50 xp.
  2. When you have finished the raiders -quest from VC, and have found the holodisk from Vault 15, talk to FIrst Citizen. She will direct you to Gunther. Talk to him about the holodisk, and after that steal the disk back. This way, you are able to talk about the disk again and again, thus gaining xp each time.
Q) There is a strange dog following me and my luck has dropped down to 5. What's going on?
A) You have found Pariah Dog, special encounter. Here is what GameBanshee says about it:
The Pariah Dog can be found in a special random encounter, in which you'll find it standing alone amidst a pile of bodies. If it catches you, you'll be stuck with the dog for good (a bad thing). When it joins, your luck will be lowered and you'll automatically be given the Jinxed trait.

Although the canine has a massive 750 hit points, it will never help you in battle. If you need to get rid of it and don't have a savegame to load, you can try killing it yourself (tough).
Q) Is it possible to raise you stats inside the game?
A) Yes
  • STR: +6 (+1 Surgery, +1 Perk, +4 Armour)
  • INT: +3 (+1 Surgery, +1 Perk, +1 Weird Brain Alignment)
  • LUCK: +3 (+1 Perk, +2/+1 Weird Brain Alignment)
  • AGI: +1 (Perk)
  • END: +1 (Perk)
  • CHA: +3 (+1 Perk, +1 Surgery, +1 Shades)
  • PE: +2 (+1 Perk, +1 Surgery

FAQ CONTINUE:

Quest -related questions:

Q) Is it possible to solve the brahmn mutilations in Klamath?
A) With official patches, no. But there is patches which fix that, at least one such can be found from http://www.nma-fallout.com.

Q) I can't seem to be able to hack the main computer in Hubologists' base. What's the problem?
A) You probably don't have enough points in Science skill. The skill must be something like 120-130 to be high enough to hack that computer.

Q) Is it possible to do every quest from each family in New Reno?
A) Yes, it is. You must be carefull to not accept the Mademan-status before you have done each quest and leave those quests which requires killing of members of other families to last.

Q) Is it possible to return G.E.C.K before Arroyo gets destroyed by Enclaves?
A) Nope, it's impossible. The capturing of the villagers is part of the main plot, which must happen.

Q) In The Den, there is a ghost which is talking about golden locket. Where can I find it?
A) Firstly, when talking to the ghost, be sure that you have got the locket -thing as a quest in your pipboy. After that, go talk to Mom, who will point you to Joey. Get the locket from joey by stealing, buying, scaring him with Anna's revenge (INT 6 or higher), threathening him (STR 5 + Speech check) or by killing him. The return the locket to Anna, and she drop down bones which can be buried to the correct grave. Burrying the bones will give you 1200 EXP! (not 600 as the games says...)

Q) In Gecko, ghould called Skeeter asks me to get item called 3-step plasma transformer. WHere do I get it?
A) You can have it from Jeremy, inside the powerplant. To get it, you need Part Requisition form from Festus or Harold's house. Give it to Jeremy, and you get the part.

FAQ Part 3

Weapons/ammo -related questions:

Q) Where I can find weapon called "XL70E3"?
A) The weapon can be found from Dock-area in SF. One of the black-haired female vagrants has it in her inventory, but you must kill her to get it. Be warned that if you just shoot her, everybody else may turn hostile against you.

Q) What about Alien Blaster?
A) The following is taken froom The Nearly Ultimate Fallout 2 Guide:
"You can get it from one of those trader-encounters. Also with luck you can get it from Enclave's base (the oil rig).
"There's something more to the maze room than meets the eye. One of the terminals (selected randomly each game) actually contains an "Easter egg", which is found by using the Repair skill on it. If you pass a Science check and it's the right terminal, you'll get a reward, but only if you have tagged any of the skills listed below, and that skill is also at 100% or more. The skills are checked in the order given, and once one is found that qualifies, that's what you get whether you want it or not. You can only get one egg.
Speech: Creates 1 Alien Blaster."

Q) What's the difference between Thrust and Jab when using daggers and such?
A) This isn't official, but I and some others have noticed this. I'll quote here, since Woozaii summarized it very well shortly:
I tend to notice that Swing does a lot of damage to poorly armored, or naked, foes. While Jab and Thrust does more damage towards armored foes.

And thrust also knockbacks.
Q) I found gun called Pipe Rifle in early stage of came. Now, should I use it or save all the ammos till I find 10mm Pistol?
A) This is actually a matter of taste and how you have created your character. If your character is somewhat good in melee weapons, then saving the ammos would be rather good idea, since you can surely handle most fights with the spear/sharpened spear. BUT, if your character is concentrated to ranged weapons only, then there is actually no need to save the ammos, since Pipe Rifle can give you somewhat good advantage, especially when exploring Toxic Caves or the rat area in Klamath...

Q) Where can I get Sharpened Spear, and is it much better than vanilla one?
A) Firstly, it is better. Normal spear does 3-11 points to damage, 7 points damage in average. Sharpened spear does 4-12 points of damage, 8 points in average. This may sound quite small difference, but in the early stage of the game it may big enough to determine who dies and who survives. Secondly, the Sharpened spear can be got from the bridge keeper in Arroyo. Your character must have Perception 6 to notice that guard's spear is different, and when you ask him about it, he will say that if you get a piece of flint, he can upgrade one of your spears. Now, where to get that flint? From your aunt. There is few ways to get it from her:
  • Buy it from her in dialogue with 3 Healing Powder.
  • Barter one Scorpion Tail for it
  • Ask nicely for it if you have at least Speech 51% and pass a skill check, 50 xp in this.
  • Steal it
  • Get caught stealing twice and she'll give it to you
Q) Where can I upgrade weapons?
A) There is four NPCs who upgrade your weapons for money: Skeeter (Gecko), Eldridge (New Reno), Valerie (Vault City) and Buster (NCR). There is also Algernon in Eldridge's basement who make every possible upgrade without cost, so it would be best to use his service...
The list shows the follow information: Item name, Eldridge's and Skeeter's price, Valerie's price, Buster's price. Buster does only one upgrade (Scoped Hunting Rifle). Weapons which doesn't have prices after the name are only upgraded by Algernon. The two numbers in Valerie's prices are normal prices and CH- or Barter-related prices. It's also worth to know that SKeeter and Eldridge doesn't ask for money if your barter is around 91% or higher.
  • Desert Eagle (Exp. Mag.), 3000,1000/850, 0
    .44 Magnum (Speed Load), 2000, 800/650, 0

FAQ Part 4

Generally item related questions:

Q) What can I do with the food in the game?
A) Nothing much, except that it gives you some HP if you eat it. Also, if you combine Nuka Cola, Fruit and Stimpak, you get Super Stimpak. And there are few minor quests, which you need food, but nothing that big.

Q) Is there any use for the Yellow Keycard which can be found from the corpse of Enclave in Klamath?
A) It seems that there isn't any. There are rumours that there were plans to make it usefull, but it seems that those plans never made to the game...

Q) I've heard that few merchants sell item(s) which can't be optained from anywhere else. But when I visit such merchant, I can't see the item in the list. Why?
A) This is mostly because most merchants restock their supplies every 2-4 days. During resupplying, they may get some new items or lose some items from their stock. So, if a item you want to buy doesn't appear in the inventory of merchant, leave to the world map, wait till the merchant has resupplied, then visit him/her again. This may have to be repeated few times to get some rare items to merchant's stock.

Q) While walking in The Den, I noticed that some items have disappeared from my inventory! What's happened??
A) You have probably been target of those stealing kids. Those kids who stands at the entrance of buildings, they try to steal from you every time you pass them. Their stealing skill is something like 60-65%. After stealing, they will deliver the stolen items to merchant. If you are playing European version which doesn't have childrens included there is only one way to get the items back: buying! If you can see those kids, then you can always stand in front of them, and try to steal the item(s) back. This works only if you have noticed that something is missing right away, before the kid haven't managed to deliver the item to merchant.

FAQ Part 5

Questions relating in moving/entering places:

Q) How can I get past the forcefield to enter Westin's Ranch in NCR?
A) Talk to the police who is at the crossroads, near the white building where shopkeeper is. If you ask him about job, he will direct you to Westin. Talk to the police standing on the other side of the forcefield, and say that you are for the job, and he will turn the forcefield off.

Q) How can I enter the elevator in Toxic Caves?
A) Firstly, you must repair the power generator. Secondly, to open the elevator's door, you need to unlock it with Electronic Lockpick. Depending on your version of the game, EL Mark 2 may not work. This occurs only in early versions of the game, though, so patching should fix it.

Q) How can I enter Navarro?
A) There is three way to enter Navarro:
  1. You must get a quest from SF from the member of BoS guy in SW corner. He will hint you that Navarro is recruiting new members. After that you must talk to robed man in Gas Station (the first map of Navarro). Note: You must be alone, without car and wearing Power Armor to get this work.
  2. You can also just bust in with guns, killing everything in your way. Not good idea, as Enclaves tend to be quite hard and there are turrets too.
  3. Last way is to sneak in using manhole in wooden building in the Gas Station. You must first gill the robed man, though, and thus the base is set in alarm. To be able to move inside the base without noticing is to get Advanced Power Armour in your hands by sneaking inside the base. Otherwise everybody will attack you.
Q)How can I enter the Military Base?
A)You need a dynamite and a stick to get inside. Both can be found from the map. Dynamite should be found in small wooden building inside the gates in Northern part, and the stick should be lying somewhere near the mine cart. First you need to attach the stick to the cart (right click the cart, the select inventory and then the stick). After that you must insert the dynamite (do not arm it!) to the stick (same way as you did inserting the stick). Then just "use" the cart, and the way will be open.

FAQ Part 6

Other questions:

Q) Is it possible to find Sulik's sister?
A) No, it's not. She was meant to be implemented to the game, but it was never done.

Q) Is it possible to beat the game without killing anybody?
A) Well, it depends on what you count as a kill here. If you count killing only when you use weapon yourself, then it's possible with party members and automatic turrets, but if you every action you or your party members has done is counted, then it's impossible. Basically, whatever you try to do, Enclave named Frank Horigan must die, in one way or another. This can not be avoided.

Q) Where I can download mods to Fallout 2?
A) One very good place is No Mutants Allowed - Your Post Nuclear News Center!. Also, you should check TeamX, which is very dedicated modding community.

Q) Should I play Fallout 1 before Fallout 2?
A) Absolutely! The story of Fallout 2 has so many links to the first game, that it gets actually much better if you have played the first one...

Q) I can't skin geckos after killing them.
A) You need to save the trapper from Toxic Caves first, then he will teach you how to skin gecko. After this, the skin will be visible when trying to loot the corpse of gecko.

Q) How can I kill <inseret the name of the NPC here> without turning everybody hostile against me?
A) There are couple of ways to kill someone in secret. First one is to use explosives. Have ie. dynamite in your inventory, set the timer, then use pickpocket-skill to put it on the target's inventory. After this, run away, and wait for explosion. The bad side of this is that you need somewhat good pickpocketing skill, depending on your target. Second way is to use Super Stimpaks. Use super stimpaks on your target. The amount depends on the targets health. After this, sleep and wait till the side-effects of the stimpaks kicks in (super Stimpaks do a bit damage after some time...).

Q)How can I pass the Citizen Test in Vault City?
A) It's actually quite ridiculous tests, since it demands quite much from your character. Here is a list what you need:
  • Perception = 9
  • Intelligence = 9
  • Luck = 9
  • For physical test, you don't get through it if you have extra toe which hasn't been removed...
Q) Is there any timelimits in Fallout 2?
A) Yes, there is. The game will end after 13 years. Basically, one never get that far in time, so you don't have to worry about running out of time.

Q) I visited New Reno first time and my car disappeared!!
A) No, it's not a bug, but a scripted event. When you first time visit New Reno your car gets stolen. To get it back you must talk to the man standing near the place where your car was. He will direct you to the base of robbers. If you play your cards there correctly, they will improve your car.
