I've been playing ESIV for about a week now and rather than make numerous posts I am just going to ask in one. So I appologize for the random topic skips that follow.
First on infamy. Is there any way to raise Infamy besides the Theif/Dark Brotherhood quests? I am trying to play a rather evil character, but it seems 90% of the quests give Fame and not Infamy reward. On that note is there any reward or recognition for getting a high fame/infamy rank? I know you need certain ranks to get certain quests, but is there any other type of recognition?
I also had a question about keeping items that you recieve during a quest instead of turning it in for the crappy reward. Namely the continuation of the seperated at birth quest. Where a man comes up to you and talks about their father being a thief and wants you to return a sword to him. He pays 2k or you can be good and return it to the castle for a decent shield. But the sword is a 12dmg long sword (with 60ish strength) at really low level (below 5). 12 damage at this level is insane - silver long sword is 8 I think.
I resisted keeping some items from the thieve quests (like that staff from the mage tower) because I wanted to continue on with the thief missions. However this quest doesnt have a continuation so I don't see much of a negative in not finishing it. Have others of you been tempted to keep items you get in a quest instead of finishing it also?
Infamy and a couple questions (Spoilers)

yes in one quest u must kill a lady named Umbra who is in full ebony and she has the considerably best weapon...u can give the Umbra sword (considerably best wep in game) for a crappy mask or keep it like i did...but if u havnt known or noticed already all weapon dmg increase with ur lvl so that sword may be good now but later on ud wish ud given it up....

You can probably just not complete the quest, keeping it until you level to the point you don't need it, then go back. I strongly recommend that when you do, though, that you turn it in to the castle. Same for other quests, but things like TG and such require you to complete quests to advance, so you'd be kinda stuck there.

Just a note:
Spoiler
If you find any items in a quest that you like but have to give up, you can always steal it back after you finish the quest. For the mage staff quest for the TG, after you return the staff and get your next quest, you can go back and resteal it. Or for the Pale Pass quest for the Draconian Madstone, the countess puts the stone in a display cass right behind her throne, easy pickings at the right time of night.
If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him.

i believe you can get infamy for massacreing townsfolk and guards as after a mission went wrong i set about wiping out the entire town before reloading, im pretty sure my infamy went up considerably. still its a good thing that its easier to get fame than infamy as it becomes a total pain to get information out of people if you infamy is higher than your fame plus you cant use temples to heal.
as for keeping quest items i kept exactly the same one as you are talking about, it was my main weapon from level 6 to 30. theres no harm in not completing that quest other than the items you get for completing it are quite nice.

About fame/infamy: I think the Order of the Virtuous Blood quest is only given if you have obtained enough fame.
A woman will contact you in the imperial city and thats what start the quest. But she contacts you pretty late in the game, and I think it might have to do with your fame. Or perhaps lvl.
About keeping quest items: At the continuation of the seperated at birth quest, I too thought the sword was very good, and I was reluctant to turn it in. But I do think the shield was much better. And I did use shield with that chr.

I think the (separated at birth) sword is good enough to keep it, because it has no wieght (as far as I remember). So I could carry much more...
Also the sword does the same damage with glass claymore...
So I kept it for myself (still)...
But there are timed quests that you can't such things, as I know...

Those who think about the end, could not be a hero...
