Post by nayle »

i'm just curious as to what people think about cheesy tactics(buncha spike traps before enemy spawns, wish to rest, mem. spells, etc.) I don't use 'em, and i wanted to know what others thought

I try to play the game as fair as I can. About the only thing I do is do the re-load thing. I will play a battle over a few times to try different things out and try not to get any one killed. I do not jump off screen if some one is casting spells on me and the partyI take the full force of the battle and try different ways to win the battle. I just finished doing in the king fire giant first few time I was killed, and after a while I could make it out with every one alive and well. If people like to play the cheese thing all the power to them. They spent the money to play the game any way they want. Cheese is not for me. I also do not use any cheat items or modify the game in any way. I have not use the patch yet for the TOB but I will when the time comes that I need it. I have not come accross any bad bug yet. :D

To me it makes it more fun to play the game as the designers intended.
The game is well play balanced and there is no need to cheat. I don't understand those who choose to use these kind of tactics to make the game easy........why is easy fun?

As for what the designers intended - well that is something only the desingers can answer.

1st off i'd have to disagree w/ you putting the cheese label on a few valid imo tactics.

a) wish spell to rest - > this is one of the few "good" things this spell can do and it takes up a 9-10th level spell slot. it should be powerful.

b) traps, there are plenty of ways to use traps that fufill all roleplay criteria. if for example my thief was in an area w/ a series of keys, each time i used the keys it would summon monsters to fight, it does not take an int of 18, to figure out maybe i should take some precatuions before i do that again, hence spike traps. traps can take up a large part of a thiefs arsenal, (i.e. thief points in setting traps, or they cost a high level ability slot, per trap)

there are some blantant cheese tactics that i don't use.
- dual classing kensai.
- cloudkill a stationary target through fog of war.
- the charisma trick or the strength trick for non fighters, or the dex trick for the truly possessed. (i.e. min value for a stat easily raised w/ an item.)
- import - export, not such a big deal in soa but created gods in bg1.

that being said, i still min/max char stats, rerolling as needed. 18-18-18-10-10-10 is pretty much how all my stats look. some see that as cheese, they are prob. right.

i love traps, esp. using stealth to find bad guys, place traps around a corner then backstabbing and having the survivors chase my char right into a nest of traps.

cloudkill + door slam is my prefered method for dispatching umberhulks

the shield vs beholders.

+ i always use the best (worst) of the powergame items, the robe of vecana.

lol lots of oflks think this is cheese but I say it's great strategy. Use the easiest wasy that are possible to kill critters w/o doing things that would be impossible in real life, i.e. there is no **** fog of war in real life so don't use it like there is.
Traps are great, what are they for if not to surprise unsuspecting enemies. This is how you thief becomes on level with a fighter in value to your group. Think out every battle! It's fun. When I played PnP we would sit around for an hour planning on how to defeat a dragon and still got hacked up sometimes (no reloads)it's really sad to lose a cool character. Although you can never lose a character in BGII unless you never save you ought to play like that if you want the true RP spirit. The only cheese is what you cannot do in real life like set traps at the feet of a dragon. KI's comments about spawning creatures however, are a good use of trap setting as he said no need for int of 18
When the warrior is not in battle he doesn't rest. He sharpens his sword.

I love to talk about cheese and experiment with it in the game, but do not feel like "the man" after killing enemies off-screen with multiple Farsighted Projected Images... Part of the fun for me is finding the most economical way to get through fights (Mustard Jellies vs. Liches and such).

<humble opinion>

Some tactics aren't inherently cheesy, but are made so by the way the game was developed. Donning the Cloak of Mirroring before fighting Mages is simply a matter of good sense (unless you're some thrill seeker with a death wish). However, it does unbalance the game. Same for using the Shield of Balduran, clone spells or just about any trap.

</humble opinion>
