Mods akimbo – now I’m screwed

Post by Waverly »

I’ve been fussing with several, or more than several, mods and now I’ve got a funny problem. Everyone is walking around with translucent, glowing, nearly transparent underwear. Underneath, they are anatomically correctish. It was interesting for a while, but I’m ready for it to stop.

The problem is, even after de-activating every mod for skin and face textures, clothing packs, armor add-ins, etc. I still have the problem. And before you ask, yes, I did have the infamous female body mesh in place that earned the recent ‘M’ rating, but I’ve since removed that too.

Here’s what might help: I don’t remember the directory structure of the original, unadulterated installation. Was there even a ‘data/meshes’ sub-folder? If not, can I delete it and reinstall any mods afterwards? Some question on ‘data/textures’ and in particular ‘data/textures/characters’. There are some skins in there, but disabling them doesn’t fix the problem, rather it makes everyone partially transparent.

Hi, Waverly--so that's what you've been doing, lately: staring at glowing underwear. ;) I suspect some mod replaced a bunch of texture files that were in the original. The easiest thing might be to do a second installation, then move over its texture subdirectory in place of your current one.

Anybody else have easier ways to go about getting the same result?

A 2nd install isn’t such a good idea. It can play havoc with the registry. I was just curios if anyone had a clean install and could tell me what belongs in those directories.

Well there is the old, uninstall completely and reinstall trick... It might be too magic like but being a skilled technological wizard, you should be able to manage :D
poster flattery aside, a second install might also work so long as you get a registry cleaner and uninstall the program afterwards
then again my previous method wouild probably be a little easier
I'm a 360 Olb owner, so I'm speaking only out of my general experience, most recently with Generals (sorry guys couldn't resist the pun) and I've found that a COMPLETE uninstall, not a repair or anything like that, usually solves the problem
If you're dedicated to not doing it that way, or there is some other factor beyond my ken, perhaps another member could be so kind as to make available to you the textures you need?

There is a problem. Normally, uninstallers don't clean up after the installers. There should be a law...and maybe a mandatory pecan pie shower as punishment.
All kidding aside, though, if the problem is Mods peeing on your parade, an uninstall/reinstall might actually work, but it depends a lot on what is stored where and why. I did a quick search for the save game folder and came up blank, which tells me that Bethesda isn't actually playing according to Hoyle this time around. That could be trouble. When people try to get clever, there is always trouble.
My thought is that the glowing panties are being carried as an attribute in the saved games, though. Otherwise, detaching the mods should have worked as expected. That would make the glowing panties a magical effect...

Perhaps an easier solution would be to temporarily rename the archiveinvalidation.txt file. That tells the game which files of the original data should not be used anymore.

I'm dead set on fixing it the hard way.

I have several mods, one of them being the mannequins. Now only those textures are in the Data\textures\characters folder so without them it's empty from what I can see.

I do not have a Data\Mashes subfolder. I only have the following Data\ and then in order the following sub folders LSData, Music, shaders, textures, Video and that's it.

Also isn't there a Mod manager out there on the web in order to help with managing Mods? Maybe that could help. I saw it on here somewhere.
And He whispered to me in the darkness as we lay together, Tell Me where to touch you so that I can drive you insane; tell Me where to touch you to give you ultimate pleasure, tell Me where to touch you so that we will truly own each other. And I kissed Him softly and whispered back, Touch my mind.

Everything in the meshes and textures folders appears to be mod related – but deleting items one at time doesn’t work because if a mesh / texture is active without it’s complementary texture / mesh present you get black or transparent areas. I just killed off both folders, and I’m back to normal.

BTW, the problem was a set of improved skin textures. I like them, but some critical piece had been over-written and they were showing through the underwear of the default mesh. I think, anyway. The theory fits the observation.

I'm glad it helped and you're back to normal now :)

The mashes/textures overwriting can be a pain. My young niece has an obsession with the Sims 2 so I often download things like clothes for her off the net when she visits. But these things often cause problems like the ones you mentioned precisely due to mashes/textures and it results in transparent clothes which I then have to sort out for her. The only way out is to delete the intruder. Meh. Anyways, glad you're fine now.

Gah. The nightmare is all I can say. I had to do that once already for her and I couldn't touch my own computer in days.

Ha, thank you :D
You know what's funny? My own game hasn't had a single bug so far except for one very minor glitch. The rest is one of my unfortunate friends who has cought every single one out there I think so I've had lots and lots and lots of practise trying to figure out the solutions for him. Life is weird.
