Problem with a Daedric quest locking up on me (Spoiler?)

Post by Swingle007 »

Just wondered if anybody else has had this issue.....It's the one with Clavicus (sp?) where you are asked to go to two locations to track down the Umbra sword for him. My issue is everytime I try to conclude the quest the game locks up on me. Doesn't matter whether I give him the sword or refuse to and make him upset. Either way it completely locks up and I have to go over to the xbox and manually power down and re-start. It's the strangest thing, and the crappy part is that it's the very last thing I need to do in order to allow the final soul gathering daedric quest to be playable. I originally just planned to never go back at all, as I wanted to keep the Umbra for good...Realized after sleeping and not getting the msg about the last quest that it was going to require me to go back and answer him one way or the other on the sword.

Only thing I can figure is that I had the Umbra before I ever found the shrine, thus causing me to receive the instant pop up window saying I had already found it immediately after being sent to search for it. Could that be causing me a problem? Also, the dog statue the shrine gave me is still in my item list even after giving him the sword. Was it supposed to be placed somewhere and that is the problem? Any help would be appreciated as these final 2 daedric quests are all I have left to do. Everything else has been beaten after logging over 230 hours of playtime with my level 46 dark elf so far.

Thanks in advance for your responses everybody...... ;) I'm really digging this site!!!

Sadly, it's just a bug in the quest. Us 360 players are going to have to wait for a patch. It doesn't matter if you have the sword or not when you begin, but upon finishing it, the game freezes. It's a known issue. It's the last thing I need to do, too.

I'm getting the same thing when I try to do Sanguine's quest with messing up the dinner party. The only thing we can do is just wait...or send angry letters to the people of Bethesda telling them to work with XBox live to get it fixed

I had the same problem the first 2 times I did the quest but I found a way to get past the bug. As soon as you give or refuse the sword just fast travel to the nearest town. After the loading screen wait for the autosaving to complete before moving again. After that you can do whatever you want, so go ahead and a try it since it worked for me.

Hmmm....will give it a shot....I had already tried fast traveling to a few locations hoping to bypass the glitch but it still locked up.....probably didn't stay in a prone position though as you mentioned...I'll post up if it worked or not... ;)

And there were no adverse effects afterwards? If this works, you are awesome. I'll try it out later and see if it works for me. You are on the 360, right?

The first time I did it I started moving right after the loading screen and it locked up. But the second time I waited a while after the autosaving and nothing happened and I was fine. I found the mask to be useless though, and it didn't look good on my hot female character. So I redid the quest and kept the sword which has been very useful.

Well, I had the autosave on travel option turned off, so I turned it back on and actually got a little farther. It told me the statue of the dog was removed finally and gave me some speech from it prior to locking up as usual. I never moved, but seeing that it worked a little better will make me try the fast travel a few more times now....thought I'd post up fast about my experience before trying it again...good luck to all of those who are stuck!!!

EDIT: Well, tried it a bunch of times and no success.....continues to lock up no matter what I do...man, so depressing....makes me want to take a sledgehammer to the 360....LOL

Hmm, well I guess I just got lucky or something. Well then if you want the sword then don't go back to the shrine, just take it and run.

wish it was that simple tank, but you have to complete it one way or the other in order to unlock the final shrine quest.....this glitch is costing us some major skill upgrades upon completion of that particular one. oh well, one of these days. Glad you were able to luck out anyway.

Actually you should try the fast travel thing, maybe even from town to another town. They recommend it over at the Bethy's forums as one of the ways to try and fix this. Several people lucked out like BT here and it worked for all of them.
And He whispered to me in the darkness as we lay together, Tell Me where to touch you so that I can drive you insane; tell Me where to touch you to give you ultimate pleasure, tell Me where to touch you so that we will truly own each other. And I kissed Him softly and whispered back, Touch my mind.

The very same thing happened to me countless times, but my friend told me how to get past it, however you may not be able to, but you have to go and beat Umbra and take the sword before begining the quest, then you go to the shrine of Clavicus and talk to the man in the robe who tells you the offering you need, this will start the quest but Clavicus will still have his dog (thats appaerntly the root of the problem), then whn the quest is started you will get a quest message that you have obtained the Umbra Sword. Then all you have to do is speak with Clavicus and he'll take the sword from you without any problems. It worked for me.
And lo ye must learn of the great war that raged fo a couple of posts and brought the citadel momentaraly to its knees
