Just a suggestion

I would suggest that you pick one maybe two guilds to join. For your character it would probably the thieves guild and or the dark brotherhood. I try to keep my character in only guilds they would be more likely to join, to help the rpg feel and to increase replayability. Just a thought, hope it helps!

While paying throught the main quest you will be asked wheather or not you wish to join the blades.
And lo ye must learn of the great war that raged fo a couple of posts and brought the citadel momentaraly to its knees

I tend to appear briefly and disappear very quickly after that, try not to let it bother you.

Word

You can join any guild, regardless of whatever (unless you have a bounty and try to join Fighter's... w/e).

But if I had to recommend one guild... Dark Brotherhood, mucho fun to be had with killing, and the bonuses just add to the excitement.

The mage guild and thieves guild have an eventual conflict, but it's repairable; other than that, I don't think there are any limits to what you can join. The fighters guild won't let you join if you have a bounty (no big thing to fix). The real limiting factor is that you can't thieve from fellow guild members, which limits your targets, but that isn't exactly a major restriction either. I tend to go with roleplay reasons - my current character is something of a goody-goody ... he's been invited to the thieves guild (well, he's not perfect, after all) but won't take them up on it. The Dark Brotherhood is just a legend to him ...

Uhhhh, if you had to go for anything, go for the Brotherhood. Just go waste someone stealthy and everybody's good pal Lucien will pop by for a visit. Even if you don't join, he gives you a slightly above mediocre and Weightless blade (Blade of Woe). Plus, lots of sweet gear and kit you can pick up later on (poisoned apples, Sufferthorn, Eye of Sithis, Deciever's finery, etc) Definitely worth a try. It's sorta the opposite of the Theives guild though, since DB is stealthy wasting and no stealing and the TG is opposite. Plus, it was kinda awkward when Armand Cristophe was adressing trainees and said "No killing, we aren't the Dark Brotherhood here", and I was all like "I am".

Yeah, that's always awkward for me when I get one of those random "Did you hear about...(some horrible thing that happened)" and I'm, "Uh, I didn't have to hear about it, that was me."
