I've played Morrowind extensively two times now, both times with thief-like characters.
This time I'd like to play a mage. I've done some reading and figured the Breton mage would become too powerful, too quickly. I tried an Altmer and although I like the fact that they have their weaknesses (he was killed by one(!) fire based spell) but I was put off by their ugly color (you got to have priorities).
Now, I'm not looking to make a really powerful pc who can blast his way through everything. Like with my previous characters, I'd like to avoid combat whenever possible and use my (admittedly limited) wits and in this case, magical talents, to solve situations.
This is what I've come up with:
Race: Imperial with Endurance and Personality or Intelligence
Major skills:
- Speechcraft
- Unarmored (I use the Dodge mod and my high Endurance would give me more HP)
- Block (maybe, because I've never used shields before)
- Mysticism
-Illusion
Minor:
- the other magic skills except Destruction and Enchant
- one weapon skill (not marksmanship or short blades again. If I use shields I guess spears and staffs are out as well)
- Should I leave out Destruction or is that a bad idea? It occurred to me that I can't hit an enemy from a distance without both ranged weapons and Destruction. I could take Destruction and just choose to stay away from fire balls and the like.
- Is there a race mod that I overlooked that suits the pc I described above? I've used Korana's Meadow Fae and although they're my favorite modded race, I don't want to use one again. For some reason I'm not too fond of beast races either (although the Keynari are really great, look for them on Sabregirl's website).
- Any other comments?

The Ayleid are a nice race to play, and if you like the Meadow Fae you will probably like these as well.
From the Readme
This plugin adds the Ayleid race as a playable race to the game of
Morrowind. A Playable race, they are prone to stealth and magic,
and have an inate chameleon ability. They have a weakness to shock.
And maybe The Drow City Denizens, though they have a low personality, not great for speechcraft.
Stats:
For: Male Female

I'm not sure if either are easily available, if you are interested and have trouble finding them, let me know and I'd be happy to pass them along via email.

Thanks, DW. I already have the Ayleids and although I like them very much, they're cut out to be thieves, not mages. Then again, who cares?
Any race can raise any skills and stats. I'll keep them in mind.
The Drow City Denizens I've only heard about. Aren't they on Planet Elder Scrolls? I'll do a Google on them.

This is true, in Morrowind things like race are often not an issue.
I'm pretty sure Drow City Denizens is at Planet Elderscrolls.

Common sense says I should go with Ayleid. However, there's a ton of clothing mods out there, and... a lot of those wonderful clothes will utterly clash with the Ayleids green skin! I'm sure you understand what a problem that poses for me.
Some other questions about creating a nifty mage:
Also, I took both Block and Unarmored as a major skill. But do those skills go together? I'm using the Dodge mod which gives you a small amount of Sanctuary when your skill Unarmored improves. When you wear armor, however, your AC goes down. Does that mean my AC would go down wearing shields?
Should I choose Conjuration as a major or minor skill? Some people seem to love this skill, some don't. I'd like to be able to summon some help so my pc can stay out of harms way, but I'm afraid they'll be mostly in the way.

lol! I know what you mean.
I really like the Ayleid, but the green skin sometimes makes me hesitate for that precise reason.
Okay, there are some other races here that might be possibilities. And they all have a more standard skin tone. I have copied their descriptions from the readmes.
Regarding Conjuration.. I selected it for my new character because I downloaded the Animal Summoning mod. I'll have to see how it goes because often I also find that summons get in the way.
Kalimer
Related to the High Elves, Light Elves, also known as the Kalimer, are a superior race that keep their homes hidden in their magickal forest. Their mind and body are stronger than those of the High Elves and other races. They are skilled in some of the arcane arts, yet they have increased skill in using weapons and armor. Their strength is in their super-natural sanctuary and resistance to disease and poison. Males are stronger and have higher endurance, while females have higher intelligence and speed. The Kalimer depend on their persuasive skills to get what they need, and unlike their High Elves relative, they have a lesser magicka bonus and do not have weakness to magicka.

Arimer
The Arimer, or Sky Elves, are the descendants of the few Chimer Azura did not curse and turn into Dunmer. Instead they received her blessing and used their newfound magical gifts to ascend to the sky, building small towns and cities where have lived ever since, looking down on the other races of Tamriel. But alas, for as they looked down upon men and mer in the literal sense of the term, they began to look down upon them in the other connotation of the phrase as well. They began to think of themselves as being superior to all others, including the Altmer, and believed their kingdom in the sky to be testament to this.
Alteration and Illusion come naturally to them, as walking upon clouds and keeping themselves hidden from the "less worthy" races is something their people have done for generations. Light on their feet, they shy away from armor when they can, but employ the lightest means of protection when they must. Staff and stave are their friends, though the more fierce among them have been known to employ a short blade when need be.
Sort of like guardian angels with a superiority complex.

Description: After the great battle at Red Mountain, a few lucky Chimer from
a small island in Azura's Coast escaped the curse that turned the ancient
Chimer race into the dour, gray faced Dunmer we know today. Why Azura spared
them from the curse is still a mystery, but because of this, they are noted
for their luck and sanctuary ability. The golden skin Chimer are also known
to be superior warriors and sorcerers.
There is also a new playable class called Mistique:
Mystiques, given the name by the common people, are feared because their
untamed lifestyle makes them unpredictable, selfreliant and powerful killers.
Their flamboyant style and mysterious aura causes people to misjudge them,
associating all Mystiques with evil power.
I also just noticed that a demon race (with three different races) has recently been posted by File Planet.. One of the races seems to specialise in magic.

Regarding the Deamon Race: As I understand it, Oriphier has now included an option where you don't have to play with those enormous wings.
I downloaded and installed all the races you proposed. I looked at their skin tones, changed hairstyles, compared faces. Then I fell asleep behind the computer and dreamt some tall Orc forced me to be a panel member on that terrible TV-show, America's Next Topmodel :speech:
Those three races are ALL very well done. To think I'd never even heard of the Chimer of Light. Thank you for not making it easier to choose, DW
