I think that works only when you are a Gangrel.

I seldom ever get it past 8. AFAIK, there is only 1 book that requires 9, and I've never missed it. Heck, I don't even know what it is.

I recommend getting your research up to 6. There are several books in the downtown area that require it to be that high.

It's the computer book in the Hollywood internet cafe that requires research 9, and there's a firearms book in the Society of Leopold mission that requires research 10.

There are two opportunities to gain a free point of scholarship from Beckett, and you don't have to be a Gangrel. The first is when you meet him in the museum looking for the sarcophogus. Just keep asking him questions. Ask him every question you can once, and avoid asking him about the same thing twice. Eventually you get a chance to ask him how long he's been studying vampire lore. At this point, if you're scholarship is less than 3, you get a free point. I always have at least 3 points of scholarship by this point in the game anyway, so I never get this one.

The second is after the sarcophogus is recovered and you're discussing how to open it with Beckett. Before going off to face the Society of Leopold, you can ask him a few questions. Ask him about himself. He'll tell you he's more interested in you. If your research feat is already 5 or greater you can tell him you're a scholar. Now, if your scholarship is less than 5, you get a couple simple dialogue choices that will result in a free point of scholarship.

Right as Anaximander said you can get it twice up to 3 Scholarship and again after the return of the sarcophogus.
I always get these as I can't pass up getting the 3rd (6 free xp) and the 5th (12 free zp) and usually work on Charsma if I need it higher before I meet Becket, since Persuade is an important investment, imo.

Just like during character creation I would never put points in Firearms, Computers, Stealth or Dodge since we can buy level 1 and 2 for all Four.

In the case of Stealth get the book from the accross the hall and sell it to Tripp but don't leave the shop before you by 2 books back of Stealth.
Dodge you bring it back, sell it to Larry and then buy it back twice (Larry keeps his inventory forever and Tripp's resets everytime your exit his shop).
Same with Melee and Brawl those can get up to 1 each and Nines will teach you the 2nd, then with the books, again sell them to Larry for your free levels 3 and 4 of each.
Finance, if you get it up to level 2, then get Jezebel's book sell it to Larry for your 3 and 4 levels then do Larry's quest and get level 5 for free.
On Computers you never need spend a point if you don't want to, since you get trained from Betrum 3rd level, get the charm for 4th and 5th comes from the book. :)
Trust me, most of the names I have been called you can't translate in any language...they're not even real words as much as a succession of violent images.

Well, looks like im not the only one searching for every way to optimise my char... *g*
Thx for the tip with Larry. I always did his quest first... I will avoid this mistake now.
When do I get the lvl 3 computer from Bertram?

He trains you up to any level actually but the book only works from level 4 to 5, when you bring his Cd back, but 3rd level works best for me since it means never having to spend the xp.
If you do all of Mitnick's Networks before actually starting on the Chinatown quest it means you have level 5, since you get the charm after Mitnick and the book from Hoollywood. :)

Quite often, if you don't already have a high research skill, the higher research books are not worth it as you will spend more increasing your research than it would just cost to increase the original skill.

It's personal development, if you are into Persuade then you will be building Research anyway with Becket's help.

An example is your other post about Char optimizing, you chose/forgot that you sell the books not use them imeaditly, which clearly the game allows since it's used in your very first encounter with skill books at Tripp's, i.e. buying 2 levels with the same book.
So for example Brawl you will loose 6 or 9 points, same goes for Dodge, Melee, Finance, Security and Stealth you just ignored 46 to 54 points.

By the time you get to most of the 9 books you got your 5th point from Becket so Scholarship cost you 15 points (if you bought level 1,2 and 4), so it is Intelligence that is the cost so with the 36 points you just ignored you paid for the top 3 levels of Intelligence 8, 12, and 16, which in turn gives you Computer and Melee 5th level so 24 points, if you don't want to spend the last 16 points for Intelliegnce for the Firearms book you can easily just buy the Firearms skill, as mr_sir mentions. :)

Does this work even if you are a malk? I have tried several times to get the point in scholarship (I have 2 points so far) but cant seem to get it. Yes, I have tried asking every question and avoid asking the same thing twice (although that option doesnt seem to come up).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: never mind, I figured it out on about the 30th go ;) just keep pressing option 1 until you get a chance to ask about thin bloods for the second time and then choose the other option. Simple :)
