Hardly surprising it is??? I mean name one game that was released during the last three years that even comes close to BG 2.....wait I've got one...BG1.... Image

Well it won Game of the year and RPG of the year.

As for traditional RPGs I would agree that the only games that come close are BG1 and possibly Ice Wind Dale (although I did not like IWD that much).

But as for games in general in the past 3 years there are some very real contenders.

Age of Empires/Age of Kings is head and shoulders above other RTS games in the same way BG1/2 are head and shoulders above other RPGs.

I think tribes was a real gem and keep in mind that tribes is over 2 years old. It is still more fun than UT or Q3 IMHO.

Everquest. Lots of people disparage everquest for it's many shortcomings and yet it has 300,000 subscribers. It is hard to argue with that landslide of empirical evidence.

None of this detracts from BG2s very deserving win, on the other hand. It's definitely a work of art.
