From morrowind to oblivion, character creation....

Post by De_Priester »

It's been like months since I last played morrowind, I remember enjoying the game but in the end it became a very lonely journey. With Oblivion I am a bit puzzled as to how and what I should do so I have a rather large and explicit question to ask.

The first question would be does anyone know where to find an interactive map for the game, I had one for morrowind and it rocked since I could make notes, find things quickly and it would save me ages.

The second question would be, is it worth going as a caster? I remember from morrowind I went melee with the nice ebony or daedric armor, enchanting my sword with a nice damage spell and using magic mostly for healing and buffing. In the end I could only find the spells worth while if cheesing it with INT potions from alchemy and creating extremely powerful spells, otherwise a sword with a good enchant would kick enemies to a pulp. How good is a caster in Oblivion? can a caster match up with a melee character when it comes to damage?

Now like I said it's been months and I remember with morrowind that lvling up you had primary skills which would get you lvl up, secondary skills and misc skills, increasing each one with 10 would give you a +5 bonus to the attributes connected with the skills. With Oblivion how do I manage the same method of powerleveling and what would be the fastest and easiest way to do so?

Now I've read somewhere it's also possible to max attributes and skills without lvling up to fast, making sure you have the gameplay and not the scary mobs attacking you, how do you do this?

If I want a character which uses a sword, heavy armor, restoration spells, spells for buffing, fast, jumping like a kangaroo, alchemist what kind of skills should I pick? Should I pick those as a primary or misc skill?

Now since I've just started with Oblivion I am totally lost, what is a good place to find:

Alchemy supplies (both in de wild/ vendors /cities)
Armor
Swords
Starter quests
Easy money
Create spells for buffing and healing

Now this is getting very long I know but I have so many questions and so much I'd like to know, thanks up front for the help.

alchemy supplies: EVERYWHERE MAN!!! free roam or just go to shops it is your choice!!

Armor: Shops, dungeons, caves and guild halls are great places to find good armour

Swords: Again.. Anywhere really but guilds and the arena are good places to find swords, bows and axes

Starter quests: well.. If you want to join the mages or the fighters guild just ask at the guild halls (mages guild is a great place to start)
Thieves guild all you have to do is steal something!!
Dark brotherhood guild all you have to do is kill an inncoent person (make sure it isn't someone important!!!)
The arena is also a great place for melee characters

Money: quests are good for money and caves and random barrels and chests! Maybe if your good at sneaking try pickpocketing people but don't get caught!! (save before you pickpocket)

Creating spells: well join the mages guild through the quests and you will soon be able to go to the arcane university and they have spell stands for you to use for free!!! (may take awhile to get this one though)

Interactive map: Get your main menu up and click on the compass and there is a map and buttons for you to quick travel (very useful!!!!)

hope this helps

Aye it helps a little but I figured there might be some cashes with a lot of reagents for alchemy, or vendors selling some really good stuff. And I still need to know how to max my attributes while lvling as slow as possible as to have a bit of powergaming....

If you don't want to level fast i will give you an example

sneak and blade

Do an arena battle then a thieves guild mission and keep taking it in turns at doing one mission at a time this will make leveling in these to skills fast but will take a long time to do..

One thing to remeber when it comes to finding equpment or items is that everything is based on your level. The higher you go the better the items an dweapons you come across will be.

Ok and how do I manage, like in morrowind, getting a +3 or is it +5 bonus to three attributes? and how do I manage to do so the easiest way? As in leveling with the best possible attributes....

You want to put your skills most susceptible to leveling as non-majors, and stick the skills hardest to raise in as majors. How you do this depends upon how you play, really, so I can't tell you how this will work out for you. For example, I've used a mod that upped the power of spells, especially those from the school of destruction (and it's balanced, since NPCs benefit, too). As such, I would never put destruction in among my majors.

On the other hand, you have to weigh this off against the fact that treasure everywhere in the game will be leveled down to you, unless you use a mod to change that. It's quite frustrating, in my opinion. ;)
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

So for example, use alchemy, armourer and such as primary skills since you don't actively use them but you CAN increase them easily enough. What skills would be best to control your leveling so you can increase other skills and gain the best possible bonus when leveling....
