Stupid dual-classing, I just don't understand.
Stupid dual-classing, I just don't understand.
I hate to ask a dual-classing question, but here goes.
I understand that a Kensai/Mage dual-class can use a long sword. By this reasoning, a thief/druid should be able to use a short bow. Also, a fighter/druid should be able to use a bow. But Jaheira doesn't have the option of selecting a bow as a proficiency, does she? The manual says that the rules should be the same for dual and multi classing.
I ask this because I plan on making my next char a thief who will dual to druid. That should be a fun, and odd, combination.

Dual-class is very anoying in the weapon department.
Jaheira - despite her Figther class can only use weapons that druids can use but she can use any type of armor.
Read the manual, there in multiclass desciption you will now what type of weapons a multiclass(since dual class works the same way) can use.

Thanks Drakron. I'm leary of the manual, as it isn't explicit and may be wrong (heaven forbid!). I don't want to get halfway through the game and find out that my previously chosen proficiencies are crap.

Doltan,
I could be wrong but I am pretty sure Druid/ Thief is NOT a possible option. In my experimenting Druid/Fighter was the only combination which I could get (with Druid) under dual class even when all required stats were 18. So at the very least when you start the thief check that dual classing is possible (to Druid) before you waste hours playing. Curdis

Really? My god, that would really suck if I spent all of that time and then couldn't dual to what I wanted. Thanks Curdis. I'll check the manual and other web sites as well.
Maybe what I'll do is try to dual class right away and see what happens. That wouldn't answer my short bow question, however, as I'd have to gain enough experience to make it to the next highest level.

Can you keep items from a previous game like BG1? If so, just try to equip any equipment you want to try out on your character at the beginning, after dualing your character. If it's not allowed by your class you won't be able to equip it. I haven't beaten BG2 yet, so I don't know if you get to keep your items.

Thanks everyone. After work last night I checked out pgs. 93-94 of the (American) manual. It turns out that the information is there, just as Drakron said: A Fighter/Mage can use Fighter weapons but a Fighter/Cleric can only use Cleric weapons (because their god forbids others according to Forsook). And, as Curdis pointed out, Thief/Druid isn't listed.
There seems to be no reason for the lack of a Thief/Druid -- it would be a good class in my mind. So I'll add that to my complaints in another thread.

That is a good point - thief cleric is acceptable. Also, Ranger/Druid. If R/Cleric is okay, why not Druid???

That has to be a programming mistake. When a dual-classed character is focussing on the second class, they don't have the abilities of the first class and shouldn't have the restrictions.
And another point: By forsook's reasoning, a fighter/mage can have all of the weapons of a fighter because the mage is only restricted on weapons due to not having time to learn them. By the Kensai reasoning, they get bonuses in melee weapons because they didn't bother to learn missile weapons (not because they have a god or something which forbids it). Therefore, there probably shouldn't be a restriction on missile weapons (as long as the Mage took the time to learn them) even after the Kensai and mage classes recombine. I know this would hurt game balance even more, I'm merely arguing based on what makes sense.
