If it has a glass top, have you tried clicking on it, first?

If it is a cabinet you click on the cabinet then switch to the items in your inventory (Left Trigger for Xbox) Then go to the item you want to place and hit A (On Xbox)

Display cases don't work like chests

To get something into a display case perform the following:
1) 'activate' the case by using your spacebar. This will open it up
2) put yourself in a cleared out spot in the room
3) go to your inventory and hold 'shift' while you left-click on the item you want to put in the case
4) exit your inventory
5) the item is now crashing on the floor around you someplace. Be careful, some items are invisible such as lions pelt (maybe just a bug for me)
6) hover your cursor over the item and press/hold the 'z' button. You've just grabbed the item.
7) here's where the fun begins. While holding 'z' you have to raise the cursor and walk toward the case.
8) when it looks like the item will fall into the case then release 'z'
9) repeat 'z' key manipulation as neccessary until the item looks nice and straight
10) 'activate' the case by using your spacebar. The case will close.
Some items are too bulky for the case to close, but the game will ignore this and close anyhow, so now your ebony curiass will actually be both inside and outside of the glass, the glass wont break and the case will be 'closed'.
