I'm gettin punked!

Post by Pellinore »

I'm at the bottom level of Durlag's Tower and those little undead dwarves (I think they're undead) are whuppin me bad! I solved all the riddles and after the last one they all attack me (shocker). I have reloaded more than 13 times each time with a new strategy and each time I die faster than the time before. My party is level 6-7 and I feel I am waaay underpowered for this fight. They are killing my paladin and Minsc with only 3 hits...Jaheira with only one hit. Should I be higher level?

Long time ago, but if I recall correct, you can "pull them".
Position your party out of line of sight of the dwarves and use one character (preferable stealth/invisibility) to active them and run back out before they all go for your character.
This way you should be able to control the fight more/better........

But it has been many years since I've played....

There is a fireball trap that can't be disarmed at the southern passage leading out of that room. I like to get my party behind that trap and put all my fire resistance stuff on my tank. Then draw them through the trap one at a time and then pummel them with my party. If I have a low level party. Also try summons to distract them and don't forget to buff your party big time before the fight.
:) Once again time to give someone the boot to make room for Coran. LOL :)

I tried these things and the problem is "Love" casts Dire Charm on my Paladin which he can never save against. Then theere is apparently a thief amongst them who disappears and backstabs for about 30 points of damage EVERY time....he always singles out Jaheira, Imoen, or Dynaheir. My paladin gets charmed and kills Minsc and poor Khalid gets beaten up somewhere in the middle of it all. My summoned monsters don't last more than a round. Grrr... The only hard fight I had before this was when I tried taking out Silke when Immie and I were still 1st level.

All you need to do is cast protection from evil on your pally. This will make him imune to the effects of dire charm even though the icon will still appear on his picture. Its a level one mage and cleric spell.

I usually attack from the east side of the room. Cast all my buffs and summon my minions then suround the bottom right guy with my best fighters. Talk to him and pummell him right away. The same time my summons are surounding the guy on the top right while my casters and archers unload on him. Then swing my fighters up that way too after killing the firsst guy. By then the theif guy usually arives backstabbing summoned monsters and your fighters can take him out. Then mop up the last guy the spell caster with your whole group.

Pick up a thief, use a potion of clarity (I guess this is the one) and avoid that first wave of spells. You need to put the party away from your party, and try to split them. The fighter goes easier. Love is the worst IMO, because of the spells. Anyway, they will fall easy if you use area spells combined and bombard them with arrows and fiery burning potions and wands of fire and electricity. The thing I think is funny about this battle is that soloing it with a F/T is easier than actually doing it with a party, just because of the hide in shadows hability. Heh!
Flesh to stone ain't permanent, it seems.

Thank you all for your advice. I finally killed those evil little dwarves only to descend to the next level battered, bruised, and bloody...and without ammo. Herein starts my next problem which is more of an oops.

oops

I seem to have gotten myself locked in a room on the bottom level of Durlag's infernal Tower. Those shifting unlocking and locking doors.....well they all closed on me in a room and now I can't get out... :o

Still Two Levels after the one your currantly on. And they are both difficult. But the one your on can be the most infuriating.

Are you locked in the room with the sparring dummies?
Whitch room and how did the do close on you?

I am not in the room with the sparring dummies but I am close. I am in what appears to be a bedroom to the left of the entrance to the level. Across the hall from the dummies room. I looted the room and when I took the ward stones from the chests around the room I heard doors shifting and was attacked my a greater doppleganger. I then noticed all the doors to the room were closed and would not open. I then started looking for another means of getting out...I tried placing the ward stones back in their respective chests....:speech: :o  This resulted in two fireballs going off inside that tiny room :( Imoen has 1 hp left and Dynaheir has 2 hp. I am out of ammo. Out of healing potions. Out of healing spells and whenever I try to rest I get attacked by a G. Doppleganger and am left in worse shape each time. Houston, we have a problem...

If nothing else helps you can reload your autosave.
You might consider to leave the tower if possible, earn XP elsewhere and return later.

Well, I managed to get myself out of that predicament:speech: DON'T PUT THE RED WARD STONES BACK IN THE CHESTS!!! BOOM!!! Yes, you were right about this level being infuriating but I tapped into my knowledge of being an old mage player back in my days of P'n'P....Lighning Bolts in corridors is an art form, heehee Dynaheir's finest hour. Those Dwarven Doomguards never stood a chance. That level is done now and I need to restock for the next. Do I need to keep hold of the ward stones whilst I am doing the Tower or can I sell them before it is completed? You know, inventory space.

Okay. I got that level taken care of. I went back out to sell stuff and rest up but when I went to go back in...all those doors were closed and now I can't seem to get them to open. All I need to do is go to the entrance to the next level but all those doors I leftopen are now closed and will not open the same way as the first time. How do I get back to the entrance to the next level?

I'm getting punked

There are at least three routes in, and there are two main places to open doors. South-westerly room - two arms to move. Sparring room, dummies to hit.
If you can get door open to the north east, there are two doors that can be picked open. Either will do. I think that your previous route may now be blocked, but there are 120 combinations! Just go with the flow until you find one that lets you in. As you are having difficulty I would advise you not to pick up a helmet on the floor in NE room. It's a good helmet but causes a lot of hassle.

Just reading all your problems, good to see you seem to be getting sorted out.
Think positively, think of all those experience points.
This wonderful Tower really is the place to go last when you've pick up all the equipment etc from the rest of the game and got your characters as tough as they can get.

Not wanting to be the bringer of bad news...but...just wait till you return to Ulgoth's Beard!!!

Have fun.

Well, I sorta finished the game without going back to finish the tower... :( I got so caught up in chasing S. that I had made it to the game's end b4 I knew it. I am going to try and install EasyTuTu and play it all from the beginning to the end!
