I have just got passed kasias dome and entered a room with a machine in the centre with two switches on the righthand side but I cannot work out how to get to the door shown on the map can anybody help?

It's been a while, but if I'm remembering the room correctly, there are lights on those switches. When both lights are red and you hear the grinding noise, push the righmost switch and run to the door. You often can get past the fabricant without having to fight it and open the next door. You could always just open the console (~) and type "TCL", then walk thru the door, and type it again.

I only ever figured out that room once, and after that I couldn't even remember how I did it
