Mmm, it's been a while since posting, but enfin, I picked up Arcanum because I never really gave it a fair chance, and I just finished the Praetor's Quest to deliver the tax-money.
My question is: What's next?
I'm to low a level to complete the Conrad quest of closing the portal, the Praetor doesn't trust me enough to save his kid for some reason. So I can travel to Ashbury just for the fun of it, or go to Tarant. Both don't really seem logical.
Next question, I talked to Herkemer and he says he can train me, but I don't get the option to let him actually train me.
I get the "I was a blablabla and can train you in Melee, Dodge...etc." but I don't get any option to say. "Can you train me in melee..."

Herkemer and "What to do next?"
"We fight dogs and we chase cats..."

Chorus: "...we drink poison, we steal cheese!"
"Mess with us and you will see..."

Ask Virgil what to do next. Or check your quest log. (I think both will tell you to go to Tarant.) Or you can just wander around south of the river to find a couple of hidden locations. Of course, Ashbury is a nice place to pick up some items and a couple of easy quests. Just save first cause there's a bug where this lady townsperson sometimes attacks you.
You won't get the dialogue option to train with Herkemer until your Dodge and/or Melee is high enough. Raise them another notch or two and ask him again.
The Praetor's quest is on a part of the map you can't currently get to, so come back and ask him when more of the map opens up.

Hmm, i'll give you a little bit more detailed information
--- SPOILERS---
Collecting the taxes is just a side quest, so it doesn't affect anything really, and the King will give you the next quest when you are a much higer level and/or found Caladon.
For an Expert skill you need to be an apprentice and 3 notches of the skill.
How come Tarant isn't logical?Haven't you got further in the main quest? You need to find the P. Schulier and Sons or whatever thing there...

Well, it's not that it isn't logical, it's just that at the moment I'm lvl 10, and when I got to Tarant, Magus told me I was green behind the ears, I was creamed by a couple of automatons and every half-ogre, orc I meet clobbers me to a bloody pulp. So I was wondering if there was something I missed, experience wise.

Which places have you visited before heading to Tarant from Shrouded Hills? Have you been doing all the quests? (More importantly, have you been given all the quests?) I'm usually way past lvl. 10 by the time I get to Tarant, but then again I don't miss any quests - that's the best way to pick up exp.

I just looked through the Walkthrough and I've done every quest in Shrouded HIlls (inc. Crash Site and such) Blackroot and Dernholm and I'm currently in Ashbury.
I haven't done the 2nd Praetor quest and the Arena, but those are available later.

Getting around Arcanum
Try this; In Shouded Hills you should have gotten quests to Dernholm and Trant. In Dernholm you should learn of Black Root. And in Tarant you learn of Ashbury and the Isle of Dispare. Side quests appear often and can aid in leveling. The ancient crypt is very good for leveling. Try and complete every task before going to the Void Islands.

Hm. Tarant is a great place to level up because of the numerous quests available. I suggest doing most of them before talking to Magnus for the Schuylers quest, if Magnus is somehow unwilling to join you because of your inexperience.
If you can't beat NPCs in physical fights, try talking your way past them, or thieve your way around.
I wouldn't hit Ashbury before hitting Tarant (except for maybe getting the dog), but that's just me. More lvls=more points=more to develop your character so you're getting the quests and getting max experience out of them.
If you're reading walkthroughs, don't forget all the side/minor quest areas on your way to different places. More opportunity for experience and to pick up loot.

I try to use the GB Walkthrough as I did with the BG's play through an area and check if I let something lie afterwards. Which works pretty well.
By the way, I remember why I stopped playing last time, I HATE the combat, complete with the failures. If they could just get the Fall Out system in there!.
But I've fallen for the overall charme of it, the graphics are actually pretty good, especially Tarant and some of the monsters.
I'm leaving Ashbury after I've lucked myself through the Orator Quest and am heading for Tarant.
