I keep reading about all these patches, mods etc. Can someone explain to me what they are, what they do etc. My game seems to be working fine but I sense I may be missing out on something.

The mods change the game in different ways. For instance, there are Tactics Mods, which change a battle and make it much harder. There are NPC mods, which add a brand new character to the game that can join your party. There are item mods, mods that change romances, mods that add romances etc. There are many different types, and one of the stickies up at the top of the forum would link you to some great mod sites.

As for patches, whele these are basically fixes for things in the game, like the "[insert name] appears busy" message. You can download it here at GameBanshee.

Hope I helped, and if I'm wrong, somebody please correct me.

Patches

There are two games for Baldur's Gate 2:
Shadows of Amn
Throne of Bhaal

There are two official patches that exist for Baldur's Gate 2:
SoA patch
ToB patch

If you only have the Shadows of Amn game installed, you should also have downloaded & installed the SoA patch.

If you have both the SoA & ToB games installed, you should ONLY download & install the ToB patch (the ToB game automatically installs the SoA patch).

So, to recap the order of what you should install...

Without ToB:
- SoA game
- SoA patch

With ToB:
- SoA game
- ToB game
- ToB patch

To install the appropriate patch, download it from Bioware.com, and save it in My Documents on your computer. Then, open up My Documents, and double-click the patch file. It'll prompt you from there.

Patching a game is always a good idea. They all have bugs, some of which are not as obvious. Something like a quest being broke is an obvious bug. But you may use, say, a spell which never seems to work right... and it might be because of a bug with the spell, fixed by the patch. Stuff like that.

Mods, as previously mentioned, will *modify* the game in a certain way. Want to romance Nalia? Download the Nalia-Romance mod. Want to add a joinable Vampire hottie character to the game? Download the Valen-NPC mod. Want to skip Jon's dungeon at the start of Chapter 1? Download the Dungeon-Be-Gone mod. Don't think your party is chatting it up enough? Download the Banter-Pack mod.

With all the different mods that add new quests, items, joinable NPC's, romances, banter... playing Baldur's Gate can truly become a career.
Why is it that whenever I finally get around to playing a new game for the first time,
I feel like playing Baldur's Gate for the second time...

As for where the patch for SoA is located, it needs to be in the Black Isle folder, which should be found on your C drive under the program files folder.

There are many mods that are out there, I just started replaying Baldur's Gate myself after hearing about some of the mods from a friend.

WeiDu has a ton of mods that add a great deal of depth to the game. They can be found at:

WeiDU.org: Infinity Engine Utilities and Mods

I am playing the game with the Darkest Day mod installed and have had a great deal of frustration. While it does add a lot of extra features to the game, there are also a ton of bugs, so I am not sure I would recommend it.

Basically, just be careful with what mods you download as some of them may be either buggy or incompatible with other mods. I have had no problem with anything I downloaded from WeiDu, though.

Good luck

PLEASE tell me you're using the Weidu version from Spellhold studios, rather than the old straight installer? Please?

As a general rule, the main modding houses are:
Pocketplane
Spellhold Studios
Gibberlings3
ChosenofMystra
Blackwyrmlair

Weidu.org does indeed have a few mods. Note that an expansion to Valen is being worked on at Spellhold Studios (check under the "in progress" section) and that Ease of Use is currently being integrated with several other mods at G3.

Indeed some ofyou have voiced my very concern, that I can install stuff to modify my game, but it may be compromised by bugs. I shall investigate further. I thank you all for your assistance. :D
