Feat problems

Post by Red Talon 1 »

I bought the "Diamond" edition of the game where it has all of the expansions (Original, HotU, etc...) and I'm still in Chapter 2 of the Original Campaign with a Wizard. I have Scribe Scroll and Brew Potion as feats and am thinking about taking Craft Wand next (they all say HotU) and I can't find anywhere to either buy specially crafted items (potion bottle, scroll or wand) to cast the spells on to create them. Is it really only available to use in those specific expansions but I can select them (and waste a Feat) in the Original Campaign? What's up!?!?

How it was in the normal game was that many of the feats (all?) which requier materials to build something, can usually only be used the the expansions in which they were implemented and after.
How it is in the diamond edition - meaning if they have added material - I don't know, but my guess is from your post that they haven't.

(Besides that - I don't think the feats sounds like something usefull either, so I wouldn't have chosen them for my own characters :) )

They can only be used in the specific expansions that introduced them and, like Xandax says, they are pretty pointless. The Craft skills are the most pointless skills in the game as it costs a lot of money, the items are inferior to ones you can buy, and its just far easier to go to a shop and use your feat choices on something more useful :)

I usually play wizards. That said, the 'Craft Wand' feat is one of the most useful a wizard can have, at least in my opinion. I never used Brew Potion.

Why the Craft Wand feat is useful: fighting certain enemies ( skeletons, for example ) leaves you with a 'Large Bone' you can loot from them. It looks like a thigh bone. Using the Craft Wand feat on that large bone can, for a small amount of GP and XP, create you a Bone Wand, which is basically an 'empty' spell wand.

You cannot, to my knowledge, BUY Bone Wands from anywhere in the OC and SOU. You must create them yourself.

Bone wands are VERY useful. You can even buy them from a wizard-specific vendor in HOTU, later on. As a wizard ( not sure about sorceror, never played one ) you can 'store' spells in Bone Wands. Yes, it does cost a certain amount of money and XP, but there are advantages: you can store ANY I-IV level spell in them. That includes stuff like: Find Trap and Knock ( very good if you're soloing and can't/don't want to take a rogue with you ), See Invisibility, Bull's Strength, Fireball, Ice Storm, Evard's Black Tentacles, Lightning, and so on and so forth. The amount of spells stored in each wand varies, but I've had up to 50 Ice Storms in one single wand.

How to create a Bone Wand: After a certain character level in all three campaigns, certain enemies like skeletons leave 'Large Bone', and it looks like a large bone. Right-click on the Large Bone once you have it in your inventory, and select Craft Item. Then craft a Bone Wand. Once the Bone Wand is created, right-click on it and cast a spell on it like you would on any other object. Remember that you can only store level I-IV spells in them, and that the higher spells can cost a LOT of money - but by the time you're able to craft these wands or find the Large Bone you need to create them, I'd imagine you'll have quite a lot of money.

Also, I've always been able to use Bone Wands in the OC and in the mods included in that game. I own the Diamond Edition as well.

Edited to add: Scribe Scroll and Brew Potion are... useless. Believe me. Completely and utterly useless.

@Ningengirai: I've had no problems with neededing wands throughout NwN games because of the ease of which you can just rest to get spells back and the amount of scrolls/wands I find normally.
I don't doubt there are situations where they might be usefull - but for the (normal) game I'd rather have stuff that is usefull more often then not.
For RolePlaying games or where more actual 3(.5) D&D rules are implemenated - then I can see the validness of them rising, but not in the original game+expansions. Then I'd rather suggest to newcommmers to the game to select something more usefull overall.

Only by using an editor or restarting the game.
Unless you are far into the game (meaning still somewhere in the prelude/chapter one), I'd simply suggest restarting the game and view it as a run to get the hang of things :)

Scribe scroll was a pretty good feat in ToEE. Too bad it is not so useful in NWN. Craft wands wasn't too useful but Craft Magic Weapons and Armor was a very necessary feat in that game.

I had my paladin and monk put skill points in Use Magic Device (not a rogue only skill in ToEE). The cleric scribed Righteous Magic scrolls for them to use. Awesome.

Just starting out on the NWN OC and still learning :) .
