Have you seen these characters before?

Post by Waverly »

Like most current fantasy, the characters are generally borrowed from somewhere. Anyone seen our BGII characters before? Here are a couple:

The figurative:
Aerie : Holly Golightly

The irreverent:
Cernd : Castanza

The literal:
Baal : Mot
Jaheir : Any nordic sword maiden

Is that so? Hmmm... I only knew about Bhaal (existed in half a dozen religions in the ancient middle east)

Further notes on those? More info, that is.

Watched "Blade Runner" the other day. The chinese who makes the eyes of the replicants looks just like Jan Jansen (same hat and "glasses" in his forehead). I know Jansen isn't exactly chinese but there is NO doubt that it has been of some inspiration. It's a spitting image!

Ubik, the Canaanite god Baal is a god of storms (Thor?) and it is his rival Mot that was the god of death. I assume that the AD&D Bhaal with the 'H' is the one and the same, but his personality is mostly that of Mot.

Hey here's a couple more:

Yoshimo : that theif that Conan saves from the wolves.

Anomen : Sir Robin from the Holy Grail (you know, the one who 'bravely ran away')

Not only Canaanite, my friend. I will come up with some info on Bhaal, god of death in some other religions. Even in Crete (where I live) is he mentioned in some (really) early documents.
If I recall it corectly, he was worshiped by the Assyrians (main god) and Babylonians. But I am not sure and I do not have the time to do some research.

P.S. (edit) HHmmmm... I do not remember sir Robin saying "What is it" ( Image ) but, yes, there is a similarity

Any other suggestions?

Bravely bold Sir Robin, rode forth from Camelot. He was not afraid to die, O Brave Sir Robin. He was not at all afraid to be killed in nasty ways.
Brave, brave, brave, brave Sir Robin! He was not in the least bit scared to be mashed into a pulp,
Or to have his eyes gouged out,
and his elbows broken.
To have his kneecaps split,
and his body burned away,
And his limbs all hacked and mangled,
brave Sir Robin!
His head smashed in and his heart cut out, And his liver removed and his bowels unplugged,
And his nostrils raped and his bottom burned off,
And his penis...

(Robin interrupts the song)
(Robin encounters the 3-Headed Knight)
(After Robin runs away from the 3-Headed Knight)

MINSTREL: Brave Sir Robin ran away
ROBIN: No!
MINSTREL (singing): Bravely ran away away
ROBIN: I didn't!
MINSTREL (singing): When danger reared its ugly head, He bravely turned his tail and fled
ROBIN: No!
MINSTREL (singing): Yes Brave Sir Robin turned about
ROBIN: I didn't!
MINSTREL (singing): And gallantly he chickened out Bravely taking to his feet
ROBIN: I never did!
MINSTREL (singing): He beat a very brave retreat
ROBIN: Oh, lie!
MINSTREL (singing): Bravest of the brave Sir Robin
ROBIN: I never!

(Later, when Robin meets up with King Arthur)

MINSTREL (singing): Packing it in and packing it up And sneaking away and buggering off
And chickening out and pissing off home
Yes, bravely he is throwing in the sponge

Ba'al is a Hebrew word meaning lord. There were a heap of gods with this name. Ba'al ze'vav (Lord of the Flies) was the equivalent of Satan - the word survives in English as Beelzebub.

BTW if you play the RPG Fallout 2, the Bridge of Death from Holy Grail features - you use the same tactics as in the film to get across.
