HELP - mind flyers are killing me all the time

Post by Vicsun »

Summon some pets, elementals, skeletons. Greenstone amulets...

They also die in one hit. And I can't summon more than 5 at once. And the God-damed flyers are magic resistent and I have probs casting death spells at them!

I didn't try that, but the priest spell 'Chaotic Commands' should protect your char from psionic blast (At least it says so in the description).

Yes. Chaotic commands will protect you from the mind blast. It's great, because it lasts a LONG time. Cast it on your main tank and have him chop them up. Be sure to watch that character's portrait. If you see the intelligence drain effect show up, back off quick until it wears off. If they hit you with another intelligence drain, they'll eat your brain (a.k.a. instant death).

If you have Keldorn, it ain't that hard (you have to be a bit high at level though). His personal armor grants Free Action, which is great against those Flayers' stunning ability. Ring of Free Action works too.
So just get your "free" guy hasted with the Boots of Speed, and give him about all other bonuses you have by items (Keldorn really needs the Gauntlets of Dexterity!).

Now it's easy. Just get your guy in view of as little Flayers as possible. Only the ones that see him will attack him; you don't want to be totally intelligence drained (it kills you, pretty bad). Your "free" guys should now retreat a few passes and hide in a small passage (which is typical in Mind Flayer dungeons), so only one Flayer will be able to attack (and drain) at a time. Have them slash the Flayer (both the same: he has to die as soon as possible). They'd best be helped by other characters with missile weapons.
Then, if the small group of Mind Flayers is destroyed, wait until the drained intelligence returns before you challenge the next group.

Here are the best things to be used in those darn Flayer dungeons:
Boots of Speed (preferably 2 pairs of them)
Ring of Free Action (& Keldorn's Firecam Armor)
High damage weapons with good abilities (Celestial Fury, Carsomyr, Equalizer, Crom Faeyr, Dragon's Breath...)
As low an armor class as possible (don't give them a chance to hit and thereby drain you)

Hope this was helpful. I did it this way and didn't really have a lot of trouble.
You can also use Wand of Cloudkill: open door with a dude in stealth, immediately retreat (while still in stealth) and go back in stealth to go back to door opening, fire off cloudkill, immediately retreat with mage and shut door with dude in stealth, immediately retreat with dude in stealth. Boots of Speed are great with this tactic!

Summon skeletons. They are immune to most of what the flayers can do.

Not enough dmg and life. I still can't summon skeleton warriors. My curreny battle is vs 3 of them (of the mind flyers). My skelletons die pretty fast.

P.S. Thanx for all the advise!

Try using the flying sword (i forget the actual name). It does not last for a long time, but it can be a good distraction for the begining of the battle. It is imune to everything. This, combined with invisibility, backstab, is a good stratey.

Chaotic commands, haste, potion of genious, etc. on one fighter. Have him rampage...I cleaned out the area before chaotic commands even wore off.
Then darkness took me, and I strayed out of thought and time

TheDude, why did you post here? This topic is 5/6 months old. How did you find it? I'm my 3rd time through my game now (when I created it it was my first time...). Just amazing, aroze from the death like a Phoenix (or a vampire).

1. Chaotic Commands does not help too much - it's a halucination. Chaotic Commands can protect you from confusion-like effect but your killers are INT-draining and stun. What can be done at low levels? Almost nothing.
a) Try to lure out the Mind Flayers one by one.
b) Try "door-blocker" strategy: Place an invisible non-attacking character into a door (so that the Mind Flayers cannot follow you) and try to get them with a bow. Well the Mind Flayers can stun you (their stun is ranged) but they cannot drain you (the INT-draining is a "touch" attack). Wait if you are stunned. Beware! the Umber Hulks can confuse you - use Chaotic Commands.
c) Retreat (you must be in the Sewers - your level should be enough high in the Underdark) and return latter.
2. At high levels you can do more:
a) Use Greenstone Amulets pickpocketed from the Mordekainen's Swords - they give you a very good resistance to stun and, perhaps, some resistance to INT-draining even if you CAN be still INT-drained with them.
b) Summon Skeleton Warriors - they are not completely immune but highly immune. They usually fall because of Umber Hulks accompanying the Mind Flayers.
c) Summon Mordekainen Swords - they are almost completely immune to both Mind Flayers and the Umber Hulks. Well, almost...
d) Send Ras - it is even more resistant than the Mordekainen Sword.
