The Unofficial Patch v2.6 Icurrent)?
Trust me, most of the names I have been called you can't translate in any language...they're not even real words as much as a succession of violent images.

I guess I wasn't clear due to being tired. :)

I am trying to say you need to use the Unofficial Patch v2.6 (current release) to be able to play Histories. :)

Since the game was never reallly finished due the Half-Life 2 Source Theft, and rushed out once they were able to release it, one of the thing cut out was the Histories.

Thanks to Wesp, current Author of Unofficial Patches and Master of Mystical Coding skillz, you can now play Histories. ;)

They are still a bit buggy, if you study the different Histories to long, you game will crash, not Wesp fault it's a bug not fixable without Source Code, which Activision may never release. :(

So once you get teh Unofficial patch installed, look through the Histories first before you flesh out your charater and be perpared of a crash, once you decide what History you would like start over quickly pick it and move on to the next screen.

Please read the read me of the Unofficial patch for many tips on gameplay and preventing crashes to name a few. :)

It's possible to use histories with only the official 1.2 patch. You just have to cheat a little. Enable the cheat console, and use the command vchar_edit_histories 1. This enables the history selection menu on character creation.

It should be noted, however, that this feature was very buggy before the unofficial patches. The game would sometimes crash when selecting histories or clans.

I think it tends to be temperamental. Sometimes it crashes if I look at them too long or flick through too many histories in one session. Other times it doesn't crash at all. But, as others have said, I have still found the history menu to be unstable so I agree that its best to decide which history you want then restart the game and create your character properly.

Tempermental's a good word for it. For me, the most common cause of a crash when viewing histories was when I would choose a history limited to a specific clan or gender, and then change my clan or gender without setting the history back to "none." Most of the time, everything was cool. Sometimes, the game would bluescreen on me.

Another less frequent cause of a crash was viewing histories out of sequence. Scrolling down through histories one by one was fine, but if I looked at the first history in a list, then skipped down a few the game would sometimes crash.

I haven't used any of the patches but I have used the histories with the console function. A minor complaint is that, despite the nice descriptions in the creation menu, all the History shows during gameplay is some error report.

That's cause you not using the Unofficial patch which fixes many problems, the newest 2.7 realsed today made additional fixes to Histories. :)

:o I guess I've got a real phobia of the unofficial patches. I hear they restore a bunch of unused character models, add more clans, and make the character creation more similar to the PnP style; but I'm still uneasy about bugs and playing something not directed by the original makers at Troika.

The unofficial patches are actually really good. I was wary of them at first but they fix a lot of the bugs and glitches in the game. Sometimes they do cause a few issues but all of the problems are pretty much sorted out now so it should be quite safe to use the latest unofficial patches if you decide you do want to give them a go.
