Help with Daervorn (sp?)

Post by bgreenwood »

I am in the cloakwood mines, level 5 and the mage (Daervorn) is kicking my butt old school.

Any help would be appreciated...

Thanks in advance

Practice :)

Davaeorn follows a script fairly closely. He teleports around the lair to the same locations etc. I remember finding him difficult, but I just kept reloading and having another go and I eventually developed tactics to combat him.

If I remember correctly there are plenty of traps around his lair - by memorising his teleport pattern, you won't have to rush around after him and inadvertently set off these traps. Potions of speed are your ally; keep hot on his tail, alot of damage in a short space of time will ensure his downfall.

If you first stay in the guard's room, where Davaeorn never comes, then your party will be save. Send in a hidden in shadows thief, trigger the dialog and return to your party. Like all mages D. has a limited spellbook and will waist everything on summons you send in.

If you quickly want to kill him you need to know his defences, i.e. mirror image and protection from normal missles. Therefor don't shoot at him with ordinaty arrows, bolts or bullets but with something special. Casting a few magic missles takes care of the mirror image and a few more will disrupt his spellcasting.

Happy hunting :)

The first wave of attacks from Davaeorn and their summoned servants are really nasty. I'd first take out the doom knights that are in the outer room, then I'd hide my thief in shadows, trigger the skull traps, come back. Then drink a potion of absorption with a fighter, send him in and wait for his first spell - invariably a lightning bolt. There are plenty of potions of absorption in the towns, I always keep one nearby for this guy. His first two spells are bolts, then he sends in a fireball and the rest (which is nothing to worry, IMO, till the magic missiles barrage starts to kick in, but by then you can have him killed easily with haste and melee weaponry all the way).

Davaeorn is not hard, his teleport is annoying and his protection from normal arrows + mirror image make him hard to hit (theorically he's the only "stoneskinned" mage of the whole Baldur's Gate till the final battle, which is great). But he'll fall to:

Magic missile (if you have two mages, send in your fighter with boots of speed and potion of absorption and he'll run to deflect the bolt of lightning, while the mages destroy the mirror image with magic missile, then you just need to cast two or three melf acid arrows and he's history, because it will disrupt a bit of his spellcasting if you're lucky and he has not many hit points. Without the mirror image he can be easily backstabbed to, and chunky bits of Davaeorn are better than nothing aye?).

Uhm, you really surprised me by mentioning doom knights as I never encountered anything higher level except for Davaeorn. However, it is noted in the walkthrough that the traps between the guard's room and D. summon Battle Horrors. Still scary but not as bad as doom guards and avoidable by clearing up the traps.

Oh yeah, those :p Sorry, I am mistaken. But the avatar is the same in the game, AFAIK. (Long time no play BG1).

The first time I've met the battle horrors they've destroyed my completely unprotected party. What to do? Reload and play again. ;)

As I will be facing D. soon I will stop reading right here. I have been having little trouble out of mages so far and my party is all 7-8 level and can soak up quite a bit of damage. I am looking forward to a challenging fight since I all but gave up on Durlag's Tower (I will work on it after I do Cloakwood and U.Beard) .

If you did Cloakwood and Beard you'll have no trouble fighting Davaeorn. He's challenging for low level parties, and there's a party in the beggining of his quest that is quite troublesome for newbies, since they're quick and well backed up.

Crap...I was really hoping for a good fight cause the last caster who caused me problems was Silke (I was 1st level and she kept lightning bolting my butt). My paladin is maxed out in XP and the only two characters who can gain more levels is Imoen and Minsc. Dynaheir is 9th level!!! CLOUDKILL!!! I may not even do Durlag's considering I won't be gaining anymore levels but who knows.

Get an xcap remover! It may be a cheat, officially, but I think it's silly to do difficult quests and fight difficult enemies (Durlag's Tower has both) and not get xp. Try Sorcerer's Place - Neverwinter Nights 2, Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach, Dragon Age News.

The third from left to right.

Increase difficulty to max, reload, fight the crew in the beggining of the mines, then go to normal, then go down, fight him in the insane again. I bet you'll have fun :p

Help with Daervorn

I got him by charming him and letting Battle Horrors deal with him.
