Should I? (COULD HAVE POSSIBLE SPOILERS)
I really want to get an Xbox 360 mostly for Elder Scrolls IV but I read the review on it and it changed my personal view on it. :speech:
Comparing Elder Scrolls IV to Elder Scrolls III, who would say that Oblivion has equal or better value, also taking into effect that Morrowind was on an older generation console. Just forget about the time difference, and the new technology, and tell me if Oblivion gave you the same kind of feeling that Morrowind did back in the day (or now, for some). Please elusidate if you can.

Oh god no, oblivion is nothing like Morrowind, the class system isn't even the same.
For one, oblivion made it incredibly easy to complete quests with your map markers and fast travel, I absoloutely hate that and do not use it. Another thing, they got rid of some very useful and cool skills. I was hoping to play an argonian when I got oblivion, an argonian that wielded a spear, but no spears. No polearms, no medium armor, no enchantment skill (it's now just automatic) and no unarmored skill bonus.
Not only that, but the system levels with you. Sure, in morrowind you saw some new monsters at higher levels occasionally, but if you went into a daedric dungeon at level 1, you're gonna die, simple as that.
In this game, even on the hard setting, you cannot die. Sure if you haven't ever played morrowind and Oblivion is your first experience, you could die in the normal settings, but if you played morrowind for a few years and got oblivion, it is WAY too easy as monsters level with you.
I also don't like the world that they have setup, the graphics are fine and neat, but it's pretty much all forest or woodlands, or the majority of it. One of these days I'd like to see in an Elder Scrolls game a Desert, Volcanoe, Marsh, Forest, Woodlands, Winterlands, Mountain, planes and an aquatic terrain in the same game.
Morrowind took so many hours to complete, and that's great. You couldn't just do the main quest, I mean that wasn't even thought of. The main quest looked boring and the side quests looked nifty. However, oblivion is the opposite, side quests are really just for side experience and money, while the main quest is where the fun is.
Lastly, one thing that REALLY bugged me. About 8 or 9 quests end in the same way. "Oh, you think you caught me but I already knew about you, prepare to die."
Different scenario's, but same ending which I did NOT like. Once or twice I could deal with, but 9 times, no. just no.
Morrowind is a Roleplaying game, Oblivion is a dungeon crawl. That is the big difference.
Morrowind you could level all your skills equally, personality and speechcraft had a huge part in the game, it affected what items you could get or what people liked you. It got you into guilds and got quests done, but oblivion, that's gone. Speechcraft is really just lame, and useless.
I'm done ranting.

I don't agree with Siberys!
I agree with some of his points, though.
The terrain is fairly samey - forest & open 'grass'land (its actually heather!). BUT there IS mountainous, wintry territory too. No deserts, no undersea questing - very little for the Argonian at all, in fact - and yeah, he's right about some of the stuff you can not do in Oblivion that you could in Morrowind. And it is largely dungeon crawling. But that is about all I agree with!
You can have a huge amount of fun in Oblivion without ever even starting the Main Quest! In fact, I don't like the MQ at all, because you have to keep trying to keep other people alive, or avoid hitting them accidentally in battle (and getting a MURDEROR accusation if you kill any of them in the process). You have to protect/help other people a couple or so times in other quests as well, but not so much as in MQ.
System-levelling is fine once you get used to it. And not EVERYTHING levels up with you - rats and crabs don't, for starters. And a brown bear is a brown bear is a brown bear...
BUT: you get stronger, different breed bears; you get stronger, different class goblins (varying from 'goblin' at low level to 'goblin warlord' at higher level) ; and the same applies to other critters. For example, if you enter the MQ at low level, you will meet 'stunted scamps'; a bit higher and you get 'scamps'; then you find Daedroth, Xivilai, and various levels and kinds of Dremora. It isn't so much that the critters level WITH YOU (though some higher-level ones DO), as that you get similar but tougher versions of the weak ones you start with.
It IS quite a tough game until you get used to it and know how to maneouvre in it - but ANY class, designed or custom-made, can 'beat the game'; and you can have a lot of fun trying out different types of character and play.
I played Morrowind-Bloodmoon-Tribunal until I was utterly sick of it and could play it standing on my head.
I though Oblivion would be more of the same with better graphics. I was wrong. I love Oblivion - though early on I nearly gave up because my characters kept getting killed, lol!
I know how to play it now, and I wouldn't go back to Morrowind for anything.
Daggerfall, now... I could go back to that if it would play on modern computers...

I was going to get one for that to, but I saw my friend playing it on his, and it totally changed my mind. The arrow that points you to your next destanation is downright disgusting for an elder scrolls game! In morrowind, half the fun was finding places on your own, or getting people to tell you by using speechcraft, but speechcraft does next to nothing, and I thought that with oblivions rich graphics Bethesda would want you to wander around in the wilderness looking for places. I also miss the spear skill, as they were one of my favorite weapons. Also, it is too easy!! you cant run into high lvl monsters (if there is such a thing on oblivion) and get good stuff. On lvl one on morrowind you could find the archenemy of the nevar, Dragoth Ur, but in oblivion at lvl one, you cant even find a flame auronch! Bethesda has slipped! So I advise you to not get an xbox 360 for oblivion, it is (in my opinion) a large waste of your hard earned money.Rein wrote:I really want to get an Xbox 360 mostly for Elder Scrolls IV but I read the review on it and it changed my personal view on it. :speech:

Thank you
Thank you for your posts. I think I'll hold off on the 360 for now, until I have mucho money saved. I was also really hopeing that Oblivion was like Morrowind, but with better graphics and a new land. That bums me out.
I'm sure that I will still play it eventually, but not right now. Maybe in a few months.
I loved Morrowind, so I can't just turn my back on Bethesda. If they come out with another Elder Scrolls, I hope they realized thier mistakes with Oblivion and come out with a game that needs people to use more intellegence as well as imagination, like Morrowind. We can only hope.
I like to think positive so I came up with a theory why Bethesda made ES IV the way they did. Here it is:
I think that they made the game attractive to younger audiences so that when they come out with ES V, the same audience will want it, buy it and (Ta Da) the Elder Scrolls is back to how it use to be only, with a new audience. Of course they would have to trust us (the original ES junkies) to stick with them and support them till it happens. :mischief: The perfect plan!
Well I would still like to read other peoples proposals on the topic, so please don't hold back.

LOL!
I'M not 'a younger audience'! And I love Oblivion! I guess I must be a hack 'n slasher at heart... (even though prefering Stealth chars).
I guess I count as an original ES junkie. Though my first Bethesda game was Daggerfall, not Arena. I tried to play Arena, later. It was wierd. Maybe not suitable for my machine.

I hope they realize their mistakes too, I might get oblivion, eventually, but untill then I guess I can play morrowind again. I sincerly hope that bethesda takes advice from the origional ES junkies, but only time will tell.Rein wrote:Thank you for your posts. Yes most definatly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It has a more real quest system, more real guilds (i.e. you can't do them all), and a better and longer storyline.Belthan wrote:I think I know the answer already, but let me reverse the question. oblivion opinion lol
okay , here is mine:
As I see it : it is definatly for yungsters, but I dunno about THE PLAN lol !
Seriously it seems to me as if they merged Fable and morrowind....
Fable is fairy easy (even a 7 year old player can play it lol), morrowind is ... well I sadly luck of words for it.... its MORROWIND the ONE and ONLY, if ya know what I mean
Oblivion is just like a 'morrowind for starters'. Slash'n dash? I dont think so...
The fact however is that FIGHT got more 'part' in the game
Is it a mistake? Definatly NO. NO. NO. NO. Its a bit different tho. We must forgive Bethesda for the changes. I am an 'older player' and I see whats going on.... It is purly buisness we are talking about if we mention games (SADLY
) a game could be sold to more people if its easy enough, that simple as that. You can see this on every game series coming out, getting easier and more 'un-difficult' (sry about this word lol)
But OBLIVION IS A GOOD GAME and worth buying it (well buying a BOX for just TES4 is priezy i think... )
I miss too the short swd, spear, ect... but i can owerlook it......however the pointmarker IS the biggest of dissapointments of all, its just, .... argh... I hate it, i hate it, i hate it!!!!!!For god sake plz WHY do they ruin somthing with such like that???!!!! Damn That s***!
well thats for short ....
another answer: worth buying TES3? ---->YES
Apart of all of these, can somone tell me how to erase spells from my spell list in OBLIVION? coz I just cant belive that they cannot be deleted.....

You would think that Bethesda would have enough forethought to have an option to turn off the quest pointer thing! I will forgive them this once, because morrowind was so good, but if they do this in ES5, they will lose my buissness.

a 360 is definatly worth buying!!!! whether you should spend all of that money just to play oblivion i dont know.
i love oblivion and the marker i like the plot and the quests i dont like spending hours looking for stuff. i have never played morrowind but i would definatly get oblivion!!!!!

OK. Let me see if I understand.
I'm going to put everyones posts together and create a TOTAL opinion from my point of view.
The OLDER players dislike parts in Oblivion because Bethesda made it easier and made it to where you are not as involve adventure-wise, but the people that have never played Morrowind LOVE Oblivion to death!
(By the way I really suggest playing Morrowind) BUT; I have one question for the people that absolutely LOVE Oblivion; what other type games do you play?
I have never played ANY other game like Morrowind. And to tell the truth I think that Morrowind is almost flawless. There ARE a few things that could have been changed that would, IMO, only effect the players convienience, like the journals' text color scheme, and other small gliches that can only be worked out by playing for years and fixing them whenever they cross your path. But that is IMO.
If Bethesda made ES V then (tell me if you agree) they should make it more like Morrowind but make the fighting technique, the ability to cast spells and use a weapon at the same, and the graphics (duh) the same as Oblivion? Along with other things that have been improved upon from its preceeding title.
I also understand that in ES Oblivion, the spells and the ability to enchant have been, shrunk?
I would like to know what aspects in a new game you think should be taken from Oblivion and which should be taken from Morrowind. Excluding the fact that the graphics and A.I. are going to be improved.
Fljotsdale: LOL
I guess your good either way. Tell me though, Morrowind or Oblivion? Your opinion, which is better?
Belthan: YES..........YES..........and oh yeah.....YES!

Generally, I play a little (and I mean little) bit of just about every genre except sports sims. But every once in awhile, something just grabs hold and won't let go, and I burn hundreds and hundreds of hours on it, e.g. FPS: Doom II, Strategy: Civilization (and sequels), FRP: Temple of Elemental Evil (which might raise some eyebrows, but as an old-school p&p geek I thought it really captured the feel of the D&D experience). Until recently, nothing in the FPFRP category really caught me hook, line and sinker, but Oblivion changed that. Of course, I've never played Morrowind...Rein wrote:BUT; I have one question for the people that absolutely LOVE Oblivion; what other type games do you play?

They are assuming it will be played mostly by the teen and pre-teen boys. And they assume such young men would find the game too hard if they didn't have pointers, and so not play it.Lord Spawn wrote:......however the pointmarker IS the biggest of dissapointments of all, its just, .... argh... Oh, I just like computer games, dear! I loved Morrowind to bits! But I played it (with Bloodmoon/Tribunal) so often that now I can't even look at it without shuddering, LOL!:laugh:Rein wrote:

So, at present, I prefer Oblivion. I still have a lot of juice to squeeze out of it!
Daggerfall was my first and my favourite Bethesda game. Despite the frightful graphics and horribly confusing dungeon maps (though I got used to them, eventually).
I also loved the Baldur's Gate series and the Icewind Dale series (waiting for the next), the Might and Magic series...
A badly designed little game called Albion, which I loved to bits and still have a fancy to play sometimes but it doesn't work on modern computers...
CivII... which plays on anything!
Tombraider
Planescape Torment
Thief - but I didn't like it much. Didn't finish it...
Lots more
I've been playing computer games since I was in my early 50s.
