Newbie questions: cabs and pawn shop

Post by Nitfol »

I'm in Santa Monica and have just found out that somebody has gone
downtown. If I want to follow him there, I can walk through the sewers,
but I saw a reference to taking a cab downtown. So I have a possibly
stupid question: how do I find a cab in this game? I haven't seen any
so far...

Also, am I supposed to be able to sell things to the pawn shop, or can
I just buy things from them?

The cab is located almost opposite Asylum (Night-Club) and that Diner, just go round to the drivers side and talk to the driver.

And at the pawn shop you can sell things like Prescription Bottles, Car Stereos, Rings, Watches. You can also sell weapons you arent using.

There is also a "book trick" at all shops/stores which lets you use them twice.
*Spoiler* Make sure you have the required research skill to use the book, and enough money to buy it back once you sell it. Then:
- Sell the book
- WITHOUT leaving the shop, buy the book back.
- Use the book to improve that skill
- Then talk to the shop owner again and you can buy that book back again
- Use the book for the second time!

This can only be done twice though, but saves a fair bit of exp if done with most books!

But it won't appear until you have finished the main quest in Santa Monica - if you are talking abou the quest I think you are talking about, it lasts for a large amount of the game so just finish of Santa Monica then when you get to Downtown you can continue that quest.

I just checked, and the cab isn't there. I guessed that it's like you say, that
I have to wait until I've finished the main quest.

Thanks for the help!

Thanks! I was stuck because the only conversation option in the pawn shop
is "I want to buy something", and I thought I was missing something. I needed your reassurance to try again... It's not exactly obvious how to sell things.

Well if your Persusain, Seduction or Intimidate are not high enough then you can't buy Weapons from Tripp till you get Knox or the Bail Bond guy to give your a reference.

Also you need to complete the destruction of the Sabot Warehouse before the Cab appears.
Trust me, most of the names I have been called you can't translate in any language...they're not even real words as much as a succession of violent images.

I don't remember if I talked to Knox before I bought weapons, but anyway I didn't have any problems.

I'm a bit nervous about selling things, though - is there a risk that I'll sell some quest item without knowing that it's important? Or is the game not so sneaky that the cheap watch you picked up early in the game is absolutely necessary in the endgame? Or, if it is, can I always buy things back (I noticed that the things I sold to Trip were on sale later on)?

Watches, car stereos, weapons, rings, medicines are not important at all so feel free to sell them. The only time you need a medicine is the (spoiler so highlight to read)
Spoiler
morphine early on in the game
. Keep items that are occult or vampire type stuff as they can come in handy throughout the game, but again are not essential. And yes, you can buy back the items you sell. Just be careful selling books as they can disappear if you leave the store.

Thanks - that's very useful knowledge!
