Sudden performance issue *slight spoiler*

I recently went back to KOTOR II after a long absence, in which time I gained a superior Video Card and Processor. I have a Radeon X700 SE, 3GHz Processor and 1GB of RAM. I confidently put all the video options ingame up to full, and started playing. The performance was amazing, right up until I hit Dantooine, that is. The whole game basically stalls and runs unplayably slowly right after I get off the Ebon Hawk there. I have to put all the Video options down to their lowest before I have a hope in hell of playing it. Why is this happening?
