Specialist Wizards... advantage?

Post by probe53 »

In the manual, it says that specialists can learn extra spells, but not of certain schools..

does those extra spells come from the type of special/school or can it be any one?

ex. illusionist get extra spells in illusion, ever level or so often, and not in the area its forbidden.

Specialists get an extra slot in their spell book to memorise an extra spell per day. Any spell the mages knows for that level can be memorised in the extra slot. They don't actually get a new spell that is different to other spells available in the game.

They can't cast spells from their Opposition School. Opposition schools are listed in the manual. I also believe they are listed in the description at character creation.

so instead of having say 4 slots, you get 5?

but why so many types? ONLY for the restrictions? nothing to do with "get your type of spells sooner/extra"?

ex. illusionist cant learn from xxx school and xxx school, and gets 1 extra slot like every other specialization but only differing in what school of spells they cant learn from

or

ex. 2 above but the extra spell is from their school only or something?

First of all, the opposition schools in the manual are WRONG!
Conjurer - Evocation ONLY
Divination - Conjuration
Enchantment - Evocation
Evocation - Divination, Conjuration
Necromancer - Illusion, Enchantment
Transmutation - Necromancy AND Abjuration

This is correct:
illusionist cant learn from xxx school and xxx school, and gets 1 extra slot like every other specialization but only differing in what school of spells they cant learn from

I would always go for a sorc and a *non-*specialized wizard as back-up caster for all the spells the sorc doesn't have (and doesn't need often)!

how often can wizards end up casting their spells?

what i mean is the the number of times the wizard can cast his spells increase as the level (overall) or wizard level increase?

or is it that it will keep gaining a lot of different spells but cast it once?

you only gain spells and spell levels when your caster class gains levels!

e.g. a wiz 5 rogue 15 only gets will be handled as a level 5 wiz not as a level 20 wiz!

The main differences between sorc and wiz are the following:

a sorc gets much more casting slots per spell level but can only learn very few spells per level and can't learn spells from scrolls! But he don't need to memorize spells so he can cast spells spontanious!

a wiz can learn spells only from the scrolls he finds (and this can be a serious problem in IWD2 as you find high level scrolls always to late and you won't find for each possible spell a scroll!) but has less spell slots per level, and needs to memorie (preselect) his spells!

in the end the wiz is a good multiclass build (as single class you will run out of high level spells quite fast in IWD2!) and a perfect back-up for a sorc (much more different spells available the sorc can learn all!) but the sorc has the pure casting power but you need a quite good spell-selection for him!

-> have a look at the powergaming guides!

im wondering at what level of wizard does the number of slots/casting amount for his spells go up..

so far if i play as wizard, he gets spells and only cast them one time each per rest/day... which isnt much.

will it increase? when?

is the extra slots given in attack bonus?

i dont understand those graphs

(spells per day? number of spells memorized or casted? doesnt match what my wizard has right now....)

1st:

memorized spells = cast spells per day

2nd:

in the table you only see the basic spells per level a wiz gets!

depending on your INT you get additional bonus spells and a spec wiz gets another bonus spell per level!

each spell a wiz memorizes can be casted only once per day, but a wiz can memorize the same spell more than once!

addon:

i have a question, this is to see if im reading the chart right...

at lv. 3, a sorcerer gets 5 lv. 1 spells.. right? and he can cast each of those about 4 times+
at lv. 4 socerer gets:
6 lv. 1 spells AND 3 addition spells that is lv. 2... and he can cast all of them about 4+ times

right?

also,

unrelated but add in here:
does uncanny dodge upgrade to the better version if one already have it?
ex. rogue 3 to barbarian 2 OR barbarian 2 and then gain 3 rogues

either order would work??

Do specialists get +1 to the Difficulty Class of their school spells, or is that just my imagination? If so so, that might give added incentive to have 2 specialists (Evokers, Necromancers, and Enchanters all have good school spells that benefit from high DC).
