I'm a new player and have never posted to a forum before.
I have been switching back and forth between henchmen for various tasks. I'm still in Ch. 1, on final area, Beggar's Nest. Grimgnaw shows up at the gates, when I port, but refuses to follow me or assist in fights. I have repeatedly told him to stay closer, but nothing happens. Is this his personality or a flaw in the game?
Any help would be appreciated.

Did you at any time tell him to "Stand your Ground" via the character menu? Is your game updated/patched? Does he respond at all - to anything? Depending on where he stands, might he be 'trapped' behind a box, rain barrel, etc?
It's definitely not a character flaw. Grimgnaw's usually the first to be the little dust cloud on the horizon zipping toward the next fight.

he still won't move after screen changes
I just bought a "new" version of NN a month ago through Amazon. How do I know if it's patched or unpatched?
Re: Grimgnaw, I didn't ever deliberately tell him to, "stand your ground". If I did, how do I undo it? He shows up when I enter an area, then stands there, not matter where I go or how many fights I encounter. If I go through a new door, there he is, but never follows. I have gone through the dialog menu, telling him to change tactics and stay close, but no change. I also have the SOU add-on installed, it, too was purchased new, through Amazon.

Additionally, I'd suggest updating the game. It never hurts and it might save you a headache later on in the game. Bioware has released a good number of patches over the last few months that fixed bugs as well as added a few things to gameplay.
To update: start the game. On the very first screen where it says Play - Toolset - DM Client - ReadMe - Configure - Update - Exit, it should also say, in the left-hand upper corner of the screen, what version you're running. The latest patch/update was 1.68. To update the game, simply click the Update button. On that new screen, it should again tell you what version you're running.
It automatic updating doesn't work for you, go to the [url="http://nwn.bioware.com/support/patch.html"]official patches & updates site at Bioware[/url] and download the file, then run it.

I had a similar problem with Linu, at the end of Chapter 3, right after I killed Klauth and she was Near Death, at which point I saved immediately. Oddly enough, after that she wouldn't heal with neither rest, nor healing in the Temple of Tyr. And even if she did (many reloads), she wouldn't follow no matter what (she would appear next to me after portals and the like, and she would talk normally, but not walk). I thought it was a bug and nearly went mad, because I am NOT a power player, I like role-playing, I chose a very nice but not very strong Rogue/Fighter, and beating that bloody dragon was a real pain.
However, I decided to ignore it for the moment since I was so close to finishing the chapter, I went on solo, and when Chapter 4 loaded, she was normal again. Still haven't figured out what happened exactly, though...
